About the role
BCIT’s Corporate Services department is seeking a temporary, part-time (0.6 FTE**) Creative Specialist**. This position is responsible for the creative conceptualization, design and co-ordination of desktop materials, print, and e-files, for multiple Institute publications and other in-house products. Products include departmental brochures, wide-format posters, flyers, newsletters, reports, forms, business cards, word-marks, and signage. Integrates digital creative elements, including web-platforms, with printed production output. Transforms a client’s undefined needs into a product that will balance the creativeness, the feasibility, and the affordability of the outputs.
Duties & Responsibilities
DUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES**:**
Creative:
- Designs, creates and manages digital artwork for production of printed materials such as advertising, brochures, info sheets, flyers, letterhead, booklets, labels, posters, forms, postcards, website for BCIT clients.
- Provides creative solutions and fresh approaches to customer print needs, while delivering consistent quality.
- Keeps abreast with graphics software and hardware, web applications and platform conversion methods to provide the client with the latest developments in digital graphic production options and ensuring vendor requirements.
- Maintains currency with web-development tools and software to provide the client with an integrated approach to achieve printed products that complement the web-platforms.
- Responsible for set-up, production, and disposition of all BCIT business cards, departmental notepads, and miscellaneous multiple-use forms for Institute staff using BCIT Imaging’s web-platform.
- Demonstrates creativity while ensuring that all BCIT ‘image’ standards, such as logo and corporate colour palette, are adhered to.
Production inside BCIT**:**
- Works closely with the Operations Supervisor and Print Shop staff to ensure that the creative elements will work with the production workflow to meet deadlines and adhoc rush production jobs.
- Oversees proofs and colour-key checks, authorizes final print production.
- Organizes and plans multi-jobs/deadlines, ensuring quality product output and meeting delivery date targets.
- Maintains multiple data-base repositories of images and customer e-files.
- Acts as departmental resource on Institute panels for creative imaging and print input.
Outside Production:
- Acts as Department’s creative liaison for outside production vendors.
- Provides first-line of quality control when contracting for production jobs.
- Follows-up on outstanding proofs for quality control. Checks progress of production jobs and does necessary follow-ups regarding quality assurance or production issues.
- Prepares file conversions, font delivery and design adjustments as necessary.
- Initiates, accepts/declines printing quotes from outside vendors.
Communications/Customer Service:
- Acts as key liaison between BCIT Imaging and the clients from all campuses for conceptualization and design. Ensures timely preparation and execution of graphics jobs to optimize customer satisfaction.
- Relieves BCIT Imaging Customer Service reception staff as required.
- Acts as BCIT Imaging liaison with BCIT Bookstore for their marketing ads, brochures, bookmarks, signage and shopping bags.
Miscellaneous:

Provides continuity of Operations Supervisor’s office during absences to ensure clients’ work-flow is unimpeded.

Is responsible for the work-flow, software updates, and the consumables of the wide-format printer.

Researches and prepares recommendations for graphics software/hardware upgrades as directed.

Participates in Records Custodian training and remains current with record keeping practices, policies and procedures (both BCIT and FOIPOP).

Undertakes related duties as assigned, consistent with the job grade of this position.
Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS**:**
Education:
- Grade 12, plus up to two years’ specialized training program in computer graphic arts and printing.
- Must have additional specialized training in computer graphics, photo enhancement and other digital imaging options.
Experience:
- Two years general experience plus up to two years practical experience in a Graphics Design, marketing or digital printing environment in a similar position.
Software/Computer Application(s) and Expertise:
- Fluency in: InDesign, Adobe Distiller, PageMaker, Photoshop, Illustrator, CorelDraw, et al., directly related to publishing, graphic design and e-file bulk production.
- Sound working knowledge of Windows Office suite, including Microsoft Excel, Word and Publisher; and Lotus Notes.
- Expertise in applying elements and principles of design, (typography, color palette, grid design, image treatment), with proficient skills in the use of graphic design and graphic artist layout software; creating and manipulating graphics, image layouts, and photo spreads.
- Knowledgeable of professional printer operations.
- Ability to troubleshoot computer and printer problems, load programs, and use digital scanning technology.
- Ability to generate graphic templates for business cards and BCIT ads.
Communication/Interpersonal Skills:
- Superior communication and interpersonal skills to clearly articulate design/colour conceptualizations, print feasibility, timelines and associated costs.
- Ability to plan, organize and prioritize work to meet deadlines.
- Ability to problem solve.
- Excellent follow-up skills to ensure deadlines are met.
Administrative Skills (e.g., prioritizing, minute taking, wp speed, etc.):
- Excellent time management and critical thinking skills to design projects, and manage the changing priorities of multiple jobs and tight deadlines.
- Ability to make responsible decisions, work independently or as a team member.
- Ability to be flexible in prioritizing artwork production for a variety of clients, using internal/external print providers.
- Ability to work under pressure when dealing with multiple clients and competing deadlines.
Other Skills/Abilities:

Salary Grade 8: $62,669 - $68,082 per annum.
Additional Salary Information
External hires are initially placed at the minimum of the salary range with set progressions to the maximum as per the Collective Agreement. Salary prorated based on percentage and term of appointment.
