About the role

Technical Designer Relic is an award-winning developer of genre-defining strategy games including Warhammer: Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and Age of Empires IV. Newly independent, we are positioned to better serve our players, experiment with exciting new game ideas, and continue delivering the rich interactive experiences players have come to expect from us over the last 25 years. We are looking for a Technical Designer to join our team to work closely with Gameplay Designers and Programmers across the studio. Our games bring a lot of design and technical complexity, so this role is a great fit for someone who enjoys figuring things out - breaking down problems, building solutions, and improving how things work. You’ll have real ownership in how you approach your work, with the space to decide how to solve problems and move features forward. Relic’s tools are powerful and take time to learn, but they give designers a lot of control. As a Technical Designer, you’ll use them to build and iterate on gameplay in ways that would often require engineering support elsewhere. As a Technical Designer you will... Be a strong technical designer and implementor, working with gameplay designers and programmers to translate design intention into realized gameplay Understand how gameplay systems connect and apply that in your implementation Spot potential design issues and edge cases early, and work with the team to address them Implement data and scripts for content efficiently, and debug issues as they arise Evaluate which elements of new features should be exposed to data for implementation and tuning Identify implementation and scope risks in proposed designs, including scalability, performance, and long-term maintenance You are a great fit if you have… Experience working as a Technical Designer in proprietary engines, Unreal Engine 5 or similar Hands-on experience with some of the following: visual scripting, scripting languages, decision trees, state machines & animation systems Comfort working with programming languages (e.g., C#, Lua, Python) Experience contributing to or improving internal design tools and workflows Proven ability to collaborate effectively with designers, artists, programmers, and producers to deliver features Practical experience balancing innovation with production realities Effective communication skills that include documentation and day-to-day collaboration, and sharing knowledge with other designers It’s a bonus if you have… Familiarity with real-time strategy games Previous shipped AAA games Are you game? We’d like to hear from you! We are proud to be an equal opportunity employer and value our diverse workplace. We strongly encourage applications from women, Indigenous and racialized peoples, LGBTQ2S+ individuals, and people with disabilities. Our studio is made up of people with a wide variety of backgrounds and life experiences because it makes us better and helps our games tell stories to our whole audience. Compensation The salary range for this position in British Columbia is between $70,000 - $100,000 CAD a year based on a 40-hour work week. The salary offered will be determined based on numerous relevant business and candidate factors including knowledge, skills and competencies, and business needs. Why join Relic? Relic offers an extended benefits package, RRSP/DPSP matching program (subject to eligibility requirements), and annual paid holiday studio closure. We put a strong priority on mental and physical wellbeing, including a Health and Wellness Spending Account and an Employee and Family Assistance Program.

We are an award-winning developer of genre-defining games like Homeworld, Dawn of War, Company of Heroes, and Age of Empires. We have delivered rich, thoughtful strategy games throughout our history and our vision is to continue making games that people love to play.

We have a culture of kindness, transparency, and play. There is a lot of heart and passion at this studio – we get to work on projects we're proud of and we work hard to be the best at what we do. We are curious, we strive for excellence, we build on each other's ideas, and we celebrate each other's great work. Relicans organize movie nights, game tournaments, life drawing, community and charity events, and more. Basically, we believe that good work starts with a community you're excited to spend your day with, both in and out of the studio.

We love creating and playing games. We value ideas and innovation so every title we deliver is a reflection of our entire teams' talents and passions. Being part of the SEGA family gives us access to the resources to enable us to build on our legacy of innovation. We have the best of two worlds: the autonomous, entrepreneurial spirit and talent of an indie developer combined with the extensive reach of a large publisher. The story of Relic is ours to create.
