Research Assistants are normally students, in a University of Winnipeg undergraduate program, employed to assist with tasks related to research. Work is performed within defined guidelines and under supervision of a more senior researcher or faculty member.

Position Overview:

  • This position entails supporting the supervisor with research, engagement, knowledge mobilization tasks, and publications associated with ongoing research into migration to remote and rural areas.

Duties:

  • The selected candidate would be required to perform research and engagement support tasks, potentially including: locating articles and existing research, compiling a research database, compiling an annotated bibliography, organizing and filing research, writing and analysis, public outreach, community engagement, and assisting in the compiling and formatting of research and policy briefs.
  • The position may contain other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A general understanding of migration processes and migration research, and demonstrated experience in this realm, will be considered an asset. If the candidate has no experience in this realm, a demonstrated interest in becoming engaged in it would be considered essential.
  • The student must have a strong academic record with considerable experience in researching, writing and conducting analysis at a high level. The student must be currently enrolled at the University of Winnipeg. An upper year undergraduate (4th year) or Masters student is preferred. Enrollment in an arts/social science program is considered an asset. Previous research assistance work is considered an asset. Student must have strong written and oral English language skills.
  • Graphic design and formatting would be a considerable asset.
  • Japanese language skills (written and spoken) would be considered an asset, as much of this work involves collaborating with Japanese research partners, but it is not required.

Condition(s) of Employment:

  • Must be legally entitled to work in Canada.
  • Students must be approved for the 2025-26 Work-Study program. Students may be eligible for the Work-Study Program if they meet all of the following criteria:
    • Currently an undergraduate or graduate* student (PACE students are currently ineligible);
    • Enrolled full-time for the current Fall/Winter session (i.e., at least 18 credit hours or 12 credit hours if registered with Accessibility Services);
    • Completed at least 24 credit hours at an undergraduate level at the University (or equivalent);
    • Have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0;
    • Have demonstrated financial need (shortage between your expenses and resources)**; and
    • A Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person or an international student with a valid study permit.
      • Graduate students in a joint program may only be eligible if currently registered at UW or whose thesis advisor is a UW Faculty member.**Zero on all resources fields is deemed an incomplete application. As a full-time student, you are expected to have some form of funding source.

The period of work will be from ASAP - March 31, 2026 and the estimated total hours of work will be 36 hours.
