About the role

Please note this role will work in a hybrid environment. The successful candidate must be located near a Canadian Blood Services site and will be working a mixture of on-site and off-site work based on the parameters for our operations to meet the needs of our donors, our staff and our communities. Currently, employees are expected to have an in-person presence for at least 40% of their work time. This requirement may vary depending upon circumstances.

About The Role Canadian Blood Services is looking for a Temporary full-time Communications Specialist to join our Communications team.

This highly collaborative role will require excellent relationship-building skills, and a strong understanding of how generative AI can enhance modern communications practices.

The successful candidate will work closely with the communications team to shape an evolving approach to executive communications. They will support the development of integrated strategies that enhance clarity, consistency, and impact across internal and external audiences, while advancing how effectiveness is measured and understood.

The specialist will support experimentation with emerging tools and identify opportunities to elevate storytelling and increase agility in how content is produced and delivered.

Formula for success

  • With your demonstrated knowledge and skill, you will produce clear, engaging communications that reflect Canadian Blood Services’ objectives and consistently align with our brand and style standards.
  • You will support engagement opportunities that deepen employee and donor commitment to Canada’s Lifeline.
  • Drawing on your exceptional critical thinking, you will work closely with subject matter experts and perform detailed research - such as topic identification, source analysis, and fact-checking to ensure all content is reliable, consistent, and aligned with organizational standards.
  • Similarly, you will be comfortable using technology and software (with a focus on generative AI tools) to develop strategies to save time and find innovative ways of enhancing our external and internal communications function.
  • You will craft accurate, consistent and brand-aligned content that promotes assigned programs and services and reinforces Canadian Blood Services' corporate reputation.
  • Harnessing your superb interpersonal skills, you will build effective working relationships within the organization and promote ability and flexibility within the content hub and the communications team by easily stepping into other roles as required.

Desired education and skills

  • A curious, forward-thinking communicator who is comfortable using AI and other technologies and making recommendations about how it can enhance our work.
  • Post-Secondary level education in a relevant discipline from a recognized academic institution is essential, preferably in Public Relations, Journalism, Communications, or Marketing. Education or coursework in digital media, technology, or related fields is considered an asset.
  • Five (5) years of communications-related experience; minimum three (3) years of other related experience.
  • Five years of communications-related experience; three years of other related experience.
  • Experience working with high level executives is a strong asset.
  • Effective communication skills in both written and verbal is a must.
  • An equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
