School Bus Driver
About the role
Sqwá First Nation - Bus Driver Sqwá First Nation is seeking a responsible and compassionate Bus Driver to safely transport students to and from school and field trips under the direction of the Principal and General Assistant. The Bus Driver ensures compliance with all safety regulations, supports student well-being, maintains accurate records, and helps foster a safe, inclusive, and positive environment for students from preschool to Kindergarten.
The successful candidate will demonstrate patience, empathy, and strong organizational skills while connecting with students, parents, and school staff.
Duties And Responsibilities Student Transport & Safety
- Operate daily bus routes (7:20 AM pickup, 11:00 AM shuttle, 2:30 PM return).
- Ensure safe hand-to-hand transfer of students to teachers and back to parents.
- Manage scenarios where parents are absent, returning students safely to school.
- Enforce seating and loading/unloading policies.
- Implement bus evacuation procedures when required.
- Support monthly field trips and adjust routes for special events.
Vehicle Maintenance & Compliance
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicle systems (lights, tires, emergency exits) per MVAC Sec. 11.09.
- Perform weekly deep cleaning and monthly car washes (per diem provided).
- Maintain fuel logs and submit receipts monthly.
- Report all incidents (vehicle, student, or parent-related) immediately to the Principal.
Documentation & Communication
- Maintain accurate passenger attendance records.
- Communicate effectively with school staff via radio or phone.
Other Responsibilities
- Assist in creating bus routes at the start of the school year.
- Provide relief or backup to other employees as needed.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Principal or General Assistant.
Required Qualifications
- Valid BC Class 2 License with School Bus Endorsement (required).
- Minimum Class 4 License, unrestricted.
- School District Bus Driving Course (required).
- 5+ years of commercial driving experience (school buses preferred).
- Current Emergency Child Care First Aid certification.
- Knowledge of Motor Vehicle Act Section 11.09 / 11.10 compliance.
- Strong ability to connect with children of varying ages, displaying patience, empathy, and kindness.
- Experience in crisis management (e.g., evacuations, missing parents).
- Accurate attendance tracking and excellent communication skills.
- Ability to work split shifts and maintain confidentiality.
- Knowledge and respect for Stó:lō culture, traditions, and language (asset).
- Experience working with First Nations communities (asset).
- Satisfactory Criminal Record Check.
- Neat appearance, friendly, cooperative, and professional demeanor.
Compensation & Benefits
- Hourly rate: $24.68 per hour
- Part-time, permanent position (28 hours/week)
- Schedule: Monday/Wednesday/Friday - 6 hours/day; Tuesday/Thursday - 4 hours/day
