About the role

Assistant Professor - Academic Infectious Diseases Division of Infectious Diseases Department of Medicine, University Health Network, Sinai Health and University of Toronto The University Health Network (UHN) and Sinai Health (SH) Division of Infectious Diseases, in conjunction with the Temerty Faculty of Medicine, University of Toronto, is seeking an Academic Infectious Diseases Physician in the Clinician Scientist track who is engaged in bench laboratory or translational research focused on tuberculosis. The successful applicant must be eligible for a full-time clinical academic appointment as a Clinician (MD) at the rank of Assistant Professor within the Department of Medicine at the University of Toronto. The effective start date is March 1, 2026 or as soon as possible thereafter.

A physician with excellent critical thinking and research record is being sought to support advancing knowledge acquisition and clinical care in tuberculosis and general infectious diseases at the UHN/SH and University of Toronto Divisions of Infectious Diseases. The candidate must have a background and be actively engaged in bench laboratory or translational research in tuberculosis pathogenesis, host immune response and/or pre-clinical treatment/prevention approaches. A focus on immune responses to tuberculosis is preferred. The candidate must have interest and expertise in managing tuberculosis and complications of anti-tuberculosis therapy in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The successful candidate will be expected to participate as a member of the inpatient General Infectious Diseases consultation services at Toronto General, Toronto Western and Mount Sinai Hospital sites and may be required to provide tuberculosis service coverage within the tuberculosis inpatient unit at West Park Healthcare (UHN). They will contribute to infectious diseases and tuberculosis ambulatory care clinics, and actively engage in teaching of trainees. They will report to the Division Head of Infectious Diseases (UHN/SH) and be accountable to the Medical Director of the UHN Tuberculosis Clinic for outpatient tuberculosis care. The successful candidate will be based at the Toronto General Hospital (200 Elizabeth Street, Toronto ON) and cover other UHN sites such as Toronto Western Hospital (399 Bathurst Street, Toronto ON), West Park Healthcare (170 Emmet Avenue, Toronto ON) as well as Sinai Health - Mount Sinai Hospital (600 University Avenue, Toronto ON). The candidate will have office space located on the 10th floor of the MaRS Building, 101 College Street, Toronto ON M5G 1L7 or at Toronto General Hospital 13 Eaton North, 200 Elizabeth Street, Toronto ON M5G 2C4).

The successful candidate must hold an MD degree, be eligible for certification in the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada in Infectious Diseases, and have, or be eligible for, licensure in Ontario. An advanced thesis-based degree (Ph.D.) or comparable postgraduate training in tuberculosis wet-lab or translational research is required, and candidates with specialized clinical training or experience in managing tuberculosis disease will be preferred. A proven record of scholarly achievements, in the form of research grants and peer-reviewed publications, is required. The candidate must be able to communicate proficiently in English.

For the successful candidate, compensation will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and will be competitive with the usual income range for an academic ID clinician in the province of Ontario, with a compensation no less than $275,000 per year, which is partially determined by fee for service. The ID Physician will participate in the UHN/SH Department of Medicine Practice Plan. A health benefits package is available through the practice plan.
