Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Rock Mechanics

Alamos Gold’s Young-Davidson is a low-cost, long-life operation and one of Canada’s largest underground gold mines. It is located near the town of Matachewan centrally located between Timmins, Kirkland Lake, North Bay and Sudbury, Ontario. The 2020 completion of a highly automated, lower mine expansion has resulted in Young-Davidson increasing production and generating strong free cash flow. With a large Mineral Reserve base, it will serve as Alamos’ foundation for growth for many years to come. Reporting to the Superintendent, Geotechnical, the successful candidate will be responsible for the implementation and management of the Ground Control Program, as well as overseeing the Ground Control Engineers and Technicians.
Primary Responsibilities:
- QAQC of shotcrete, ground support installation, grouting, ground support auditing and paste fill;
- Document inspections of underground stoping and development;
- Rock mass characterization and classification;
- Seismic processing and seismic analysis;
- Deswik, mXrap and other related software modelling and model interpretation;
- Drillhole logging and structure mapping in pit, underground and shaft environments;
- Stability assessments of underground development, pillars and stope shapes;
- Excavation rehabilitation after blast damage, equipment damage and seismic damage;
- Stoping sequence recommendations;
- Re-entry analysis for seismic events and stoping;
- Underground kinematic analysis;
- Conduct analysis and install different types of geotechnical instrumentation, including lidar, pressure cells, piezometer sensors, and seismic sensors;
- Identify hazardous areas pre-mining and prescribe suitable ground support standards;
- Review engineering designs; and
- Other duties, as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, Qualifications and Experience:

Sc. Geotechnical Engineering or other relevant degree, such as B.Sc. Geological Engineering or Mining Engineering;

Masters in Geotechnical Engineering is an asset;

Affiliation (or eligibility to register) with a Professional Engineering of Ontario;

Strong safety conscious with a positive attitude;
-
Five years minimum of experience in underground mining operation working in Ground Control;
-
Experience with microseismic systems;
-
Proficiency with Deswik, Vulcan, or other mine planning software is an asset;
-
Accreditation in Supervisory U/G Common Core modules is an asset;

Strong interpersonal, communications, and analytical skills; and
-
Strong organization and time management skills.
Schedule: 4 days on, 3 days off – 10 hour shifts OR 7 days on, 7 days off – 11 hour shifts
