BUS MONITOR
Principals: Alexandra McDonald, Doug Stewart
Cyclical layoff during the summer period
Qualifications:
Hold a Secondary School Diploma or a diploma or an attestation of studies recognized as equivalent by the competent authority, and have one (1) year of pertinent experience in those areas requiring self-discipline, general concepts in psychology and human relations skills.
AND
Hold a certificate dated no more than three (3) years attesting to the successful completion of:
- a standard first aid course of a minimum eight (8) hour duration;
- a refresher course of a minimum six (6) hour duration updating the skills acquired in the course mentioned in subparagraph 1.
Other Requirements:
- Must be bilingual (English & French)
- Experience working with children
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to remain calm and respond effectively in emergency situations
- Patience, reliability, and a strong sense of responsibility
- Basic understanding of student safety and behavior management
Working Conditions:
- Part-time hours, typically during morning and afternoon school transportation times
- Split shifts may be required
- Work is performed on a school bus in various weather conditions
Nature of the work: The Bus Monitor ensures the safety, well-being, and orderly conduct of elementary school students during transportation to and from school. Working alongside the bus driver, the monitor supervises students, assists with boarding and disembarking, and helps maintain a positive and respectful environment on the bus.
Daily Tasks/Dossiers:
- Supervise students while boarding, riding, and exiting the school bus
- Ensure students remain seated and follow safety rules at all times
- Assist younger students and those with special needs, including securing seatbelts or harnesses if required
- Support the safe crossing of students when necessary
- Maintain order and address behavioral concerns in a calm and respectful manner
- Communicate any incidents, concerns, or behavioral issues to school administration or appropriate staff
- Conduct visual checks of the bus to ensure no students or belongings are left behind
- Assist in emergency situations following established safety procedures
