Position Summary
GenCore Ltd. is seeking an experienced Electrical Engineer – Substations to support the engineering, design, and delivery of electrical substation projects ranging from distribution to transmission voltage levels. The successful candidate will lead multidisciplinary engineering activities throughout all project phases, including conceptual design, detailed engineering, procurement support, construction support, commissioning, and project closeout. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in substation engineering, demonstrate sound engineering judgment, and have proven experience delivering utility infrastructure projects for electric utilities, municipalities, EPC contractors, or consulting engineering firms. The successful applicant will play a key role in mentoring junior engineers, maintaining engineering quality, and supporting business growth through technical leadership.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the engineering and design of distribution and transmission substations from concept through detailed design and construction support.
- Prepare and review single-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, protection and control drawings, wiring diagrams, panel layouts, cable schedules, and equipment layouts.
- Develop substation physical layouts including equipment arrangements, bus configurations, grounding systems, conduit layouts, cable routing, lighting, station service, and lightning protection.
- Perform engineering calculations including Ground grid design and analysis, Cable ampacity calculations, AC and DC load calculations, Voltage drop calculations, Short-circuit evaluations, Equipment sizing
- Prepare engineering reports, technical specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), procurement documentation, and construction packages.
- Coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities involving civil, structural, protection & control, telecommunications, and overhead transmission disciplines.
- Review vendor drawings and technical submittals for compliance with project specifications.
- Provide technical guidance during procurement, manufacturing, construction, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Conduct engineering design reviews and ensure compliance with applicable utility standards, CSA standards, IEEE standards, IEC standards, and client specifications.
- Support project planning by providing engineering input on scope, schedules, budgets, risks, and resource requirements.
- Participate in client meetings, technical workshops, design reviews, and site visits.
- Provide engineering support during construction, respond to Requests for Information (RFIs), review field changes, and prepare as-built documentation.
- Mentor junior engineers, designers, and technicians while promoting engineering excellence and continuous improvement.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from an accredited university.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation with Professional Engineers Ontario (PEO) or from other province is mandatory.
- Minimum 8 years of experience in electrical substation engineering.
- Experience delivering distribution and transmission substation projects ranging from 4 kV to 230 kV (higher voltage experience considered an asset).
- Strong understanding of substation primary design, station layout, grounding, bus design, cable systems, station service, and equipment selection.
- Working knowledge of protection and control systems, relay panels, SCADA interfaces, and station communications.
- Experience with utility standards
- Experience performing engineering calculations using industry software such as: CYMCAP, ETAP, CYME, CDEGS
- Strong knowledge of CSA, IEEE, IEC, NESC, and applicable Canadian utility design standards.
- Demonstrated ability to lead engineering teams and coordinate multidisciplinary projects.
- Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills.
- Strong client relationship and stakeholder management abilities.
- Valid Ontario driver's license and willingness to travel to project sites as required.
Compensation
Annual Salary: $110,000 – $140,000, commensurate with qualifications and experience.
