The Livestock Development Supervisor will lead the Department’s livestock team to deliver on the Livestock Strategy and other related programming. They are responsible for providing leadership, in partnership with industry groups and research organizations, in identifying development opportunities for the livestock sectors. They will co-ordinate and provide technical advice, assistance and information to staff and producers with an emphasis on livestock production management.
Duties will include but are not limited to:
- Provide supervision for two positions and lead the employees in the delivery of programs and development of the Livestock Strategy and participate in relevant program review committees
- Serve as a liaison for provincial and regional livestock organizations, provide them with support and advice, assist with conference planning and educational opportunities for producers, and assist with program delivery;
- Develop, where appropriate, in coordination with Future Farmer Advisors and Development Officers, packages of information in the areas of production, interpretation of current research and market trends, etc.;
- Provide technical information to farmers, government personnel and farm organizations on livestock production, harvesting and storage of forage crops;
- When required, in unique or emerging issues, provide industry development and/or technical information to clients;
- Work closely with the Animal Health team on Foreign Animal Disease planning;
- Promote the Premise Identification Program;
- Navigate disputes between farmers and the public through the framework developed by the Farm Practices review Board (FPRB);
- Direct the Board members to update the governing legislation and bring work of the FPRB in line with other regions;
- Implement Conflict Resolution skills to deal with a variety of stakeholders with differing perspectives on an issue;
- Represent the Province on National and Inter-Provincial Committees;
- Prepare briefing notes, industry profiles, web page updates;
- Other assigned duties as required.
Minimum Qualifications:
- M. Sc. In Animal Science (Agriculture) or a similar specialty and experience in developing and implementing a livestock extension program;
OR - B. Sc. in Animal Science (Agriculture) specializing in Animal Science or a similar specialty and considerable related experience in developing and implementing a similar Livestock extension program.
- Demonstrated equivalencies will be considered.
- Experience in computer applications and applied research.
- Must be eligible for membership in the Prince Edward Island Institute of Agrologists.
- Must have a valid Prince Edward Island driver’s license and the provision of a vehicle.
- The successful applicant must provide a satisfactory Criminal Records Check prior to beginning employment.
- Must have excellent skills in written and oral communication.
- Must have strong interpersonal and teamworking skills.

- Positive attitude - communicate through a positive attitude the value of the work and the clients.
- Understanding of effective information delivery systems for PEI farmers.
