What You’ll Be Doing

Our goal is to be the premier client-focused wholesale bank based in Canada. To deliver on this, we provide a wide range of credit, capital markets, investment banking, merchant banking and research products and services to government, institutional, corporate and retail clients in Canada and in key markets around the world. With guidance from Managing Directors, Executive Directors, Directors, or Associates, you will complete assignments that impact the firm's bottom line through transaction and financing execution, client relationship support, industry and company research, and contributing to the overall communication flow across our global offices. The role provides you with steep learning and an ability to observe and influence the strategic direction of our clients’ businesses with exposure to company executives and board of directors.

The role is based in Toronto and CIBC ‘s DCM group is engaged in advising, structuring and originating debt securities across a broad range of government and corporate issuers sectors in Canada. The group is actively involved in executing investment grade and high yield transactions in both the public and private placement markets to institutional and retail investors in Canada.

Analysts on the team will be expected to provide a broad range of analytical, research and presentation preparation support to all the professionals within their group.

How You’ll Succeed

  • Research – Conduct industry research and analysis to assist in the identification and/or analysis of investment banking business opportunities
  • Proposal – Assisting in the structuring, execution and documentation of new issue debt transactions. Coordinating the provision of new issue pricing information to clients. (both in C$ and U$) Preparing client presentations/pitches
  • Financial Modeling – Develop and audit sophisticated financial models
  • Analysis – Conducting credit analysis and financial modeling for prospective issuers. Monitoring the overall Canadian capital markets. (flows, trends, funding opportunities)
  • Support – Develop and maintain database for investor feedback related to new issues including reverse inquiries
  • Relationship Building – Grow your internal and external networks by coordinating client-focused and/or deal-focused “brainstorming” sessions with relevant team members and product specialists. Developing relationships and actively communicating with various appropriate contacts at our clients. Developing and maintaining an internal network with product groups and other business groups. Developing and maintaining an external network with the market (i.e. key stakeholders, clients, prospects, etc.) Liaising with other units of CIBC Capital Markets in preparing proposals for clients. Who You Are

  • You have an undergraduate degree in Finance, Accounting, Mathematics, Computer Science or Economics. Completion of and/or intention to complete a CA or CFA, is preferred.
  • You are success-oriented. Extremely dedicated and motivated individual with high career aspirations. Must be capable of assuming high levels of responsibility within short time frames. Success to you is helping solve and execute on the complex financial and strategic needs of our clients.
  • You can demonstrate relevant industry experience. A minimum of 1-year of experience in one or more of investment banking, corporate finance, private equity, project financing, tax equity, or investment review is required. Experience with meaningful financial modeling and analysis is a plus.
  • You have relevant financial skills. Excellent analytical ability including demonstrated knowledge of valuation techniques and practices, including cash flow and returns analyses. Knowledge of accounting principles relating to financial statement preparation and business combinations.
  • You possess technical skills (Programs, Methodologies, Systems). Strong quantitative technical skills as it relates to basic computer applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint), industry technology (FactSet, Bloomberg) and other applicable software.
  • You’re motivated by collective success. Well-developed interpersonal and relationship building skills in order to develop, manage and leverage relationships with clients, and internal and/or external business partners. Well-developed written and verbal communication skills sufficient to provide detailed explanation and interpretation of factual and conceptual information and ideas related to complex technical and conceptual issues. Unquestioned professionalism, ethics and reputation and proven ability to exercise strong independent judgment when making business decisions and/or representing CIBC Capital Markets.
