Job Description POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY: The Day Camp Program Leader is responsible for coordinating, conducting, and supervising all day camp activities while assisting the leadership and direction of day camp staff. The Day Camp Program Leader will provide a safe, fun, caring environment while the children are participating in a variety of activities, making new friends, and learning about the Christian faith.
Accountabilities **The incumbent may perform all, some, or similar range of duties.
Administration**
- Lead the development and implementation of camp activities, coordinating the schedule
- Provide direct leadership of daily camp operations and assist with various camp activities including Bible lessons, arts & crafts, music, sports and games.
- Create and implement a 6-week Day Camp program for children aged 5-11; overseeing day-to-day operations of the camp
General Duties
- Works with the Damp Camp Workers in planning, and implementing camp
- Oversee engagement of volunteers and their activities.
- Observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, and address issues, where possible
- Chaperone children on field trips
- Encourage respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
- Ensure the health and safety of all children
- Responsible for daily camp logistics
- Supervise scheduled activities
- Be aware of all safety protocol and government regulations and ensure that the camp falls in line with these requirements. This includes Covid-19 protocols and procedures as well as Online Safety regulations for The Salvation Army.
- Work cooperatively with the camp staff, church staff and families of those children attending day camp.
- Attend all staff training/orientation and meetings
The above responsibilities must be discharged in accordance with The Salvation Army’s Mission Statement, in a professional manner, upholding our code of conduct.
Working Conditions
- This is a temporary full-time position based on 35 hours per week.
- Flexibility in scheduling is required.
- Church grounds (Both indoor and outdoor work environment)
- Working with youth from the ages of 5-11 years old.
- Indoor and outdoor environment
- Fast paced and noisy environment
- Up to 50% travel to external program locations (e.g., public parks, library, etc.) by public transit or walking, depending on weather conditions.
Education, Experience And Qualifications
- Willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
- Work in compliance with OH&S Act and Regulations and abide by The Salvation Army’s health and safety policies and procedures.
- Alternative combination of education and Experience may be considered.
- Education, Qualifications and Certifications:
- Relevant post-secondary coursework or education, adequate training and/or relevant experience is preferred (ex: Education program completion or degree, Outdoor Survival Skills, Theological Studies, Administration, Program Coordination).
- Standard First Aid + CPR & AED (Intermediate First Aid) an asset.
- Alternative combination of education and experience may be considered.
Experience And Knowledge
- 1 year experience working in a summer camping program setting.
- Skills and Capabilities:
- Clearance through internal Salvation Army child & youth abuse prevention protocols.
- Work within the total camp program and cooperate with other staff members.
- Flexible and have a good disposition.
- Able to maintain a responsible level of maturity and leadership.
- Able to lift, carry or move up to 29 lbs.

- Attention to detail, problem solving and analytical skills.
- Self-motivated and disciplined.
- Strong sense of integrity and confidentiality with professional ethics.
- Organized, hardworking, dedicated, creative, and possess leadership qualities.
- Experienced in working with children.
- Able to work well independently and as in a cooperative team-oriented atmosphere.
- Ability to undergo applicable screening and background checks successfully that are satisfactory to The Salvation Army, in its sole discretion (i.e., The Salvation Army Abuse Registry) and provide an original copy of a Background Check with vulnerable sector screening
- Ability and willingness to develop an understanding and support for the mission and purpose of The Salvation Army in Canada and its implications as related to position responsibilities.
This position is funded in part through the Canada Summer Jobs Program and the following represents the applicant criteria:
- Is between 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of the employment.
- Is a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*: and,
- Is legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations.
- *International students are not eligible. Recent immigrants are eligible if they are a Canadian Citizen or a permanent resident.
Compensation The target hiring range for this position is $17.60 to $20.64 with a maximum of $24.77.
Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
