Biology Horticulturalist (Continuing Part-Time)
About the role
Duties and Responsibilities:
Reporting to the Chair and working under the supervision of the Department/Institute Administrator, the Biology Horticulturalist coordinates the greenhouse operations in the Nesbitt Biology building. The incumbent cares for and preserves the valuable plant collection housed in the Nesbitt Greenhouses, including plant propagation, routine maintenance, and disease management. The incumbent supports teaching by cultivating plants from the botanical collection for use in courses, teaching laboratories, and outreach activities. The Biology Horticulturalist also provides technical advice to teaching staff, undergraduate and graduate students, and researchers about best practices.
The incumbent helps facilitate opportunities for revenue generation through the coordination of the rental of greenhouse units and other contracts involving the greenhouses. They also assist with public outreach activities directed at prospective students and the community, including the Annual Biology Butterfly Show.
Qualifications:
The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:
- In addition to an extensive knowledge of horticultural practices, the incumbent must also possess demonstrated administrative and organizational skills as well as experience in basic business practices.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills are essential to interact effectively with undergraduate and graduate students, on-campus researchers, off-campus clients, school groups and clubs, service and repair representatives, other departments on campus and external agencies such as the NWRC unit of Environment and Climate Change Canada.
- The incumbent must demonstrate sound judgment and the ability to effectively prioritize tasks in a dynamic, multitasked environment.
- Strong analytical and interpretative skills are needed to provide support to researchers in their field of study.
Education and Experience:
The above is normally acquired through:
- Completion of a two-year recognized diploma program in Horticultural Science or equivalent.
- Three years of hands-on experience working with a diversity of plants.
