Position Summary
Reporting to the Director of Finance & Controller, the Assistant Controller is a key contributor to the Calgary Stampede’s financial management and reporting functions. This role oversees the full accounting cycle for the organization and its related entities. The Assistant Controller leads the accounting team’s day-to-day activities, ensuring that all operational and intercompany transactions are accurately processed and recorded.
The Assistant Controller ensures adherence to accounting and tax standards while driving efficiency and consistency across financial processes. This role contributes to continuous improvement initiatives and provides financial insight that supports sound operational and strategic decisions.

Responsibilities
Responsibilities of this role include, but are not limited to:
Continuous Improvement and Project Support
- Develop, document, implement and monitor internal controls and policies to comply with legislation, establish best practices, and safeguard organizational assets
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, proactively identifying issues and implementing process/policy improvements to streamline accounting processes
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with Stampede operations and other key internal stakeholders, becoming a trusted business advisor departments and committees seek out for solutions
Accounting
- Oversee or perform tasks to ensure financial functions are reconciled monthly including (but not limited to): cash, accounts receivable, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, accounts payable, deferred revenue, foreign exchange
- Provide feedback/mentorship to the accounting team to aid with their development
- Ensure records systems are maintained in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles
- Prepare financial statements and related note disclosure in accordance with Accounting Standards for Not-for-Profit Organizations (“ASNPO”)
- Act as liaison with the Calgary Stampede’s external auditors
- Analyze complex transactions/agreements and conclude on associated accounting and financial reporting treatment
- Collaborate with the Director of Finance & Controller on budgeting and forecasting for the CS Accounting function and the Calgary Stampede Foundation
- Prepare content for Audit & Finance committee meetings
- Respond to internal inquiries and provide clear, actionable financial insights to non-financial stakeholders.
- Ad hoc government and other compliance reporting requirements
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
The ideal candidate will have great people skills, problem solving ability, be organized, tactful, service oriented and enjoy working with diverse groups. An undergraduate degree from an accredited university and a CPA designation are mandatory, preferably with an audit background from an accounting firm. In addition, the following attributes are required to excel in this role:
- A strong team player. We work in a community-based organization where engaging various stakeholders will be key to your success
- An accounting designation with at least two to three years of post-designation experience
- Experience in financial reporting under ASNPO is an asset
- Project management experience, including an understanding of the complexity in delivering technology-based accounting solutions across a diverse and complex organization
- Attention to detail and problem-solving ability
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite, with advanced abilities in Excel
- Strong communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills
- Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to work effectively under pressure and manage multiple priorities
- Must be able to manage a flexible work arrangement during peak periods
- High moral and ethical standards
