DESCRIPTION:
The Social Worker II, as a key member of the Family Court Clinic multidisciplinary team, provides assessment, treatment and consultation in accordance with Code of Ethics and Professional Standard of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers and the vision, mission and values of Kingston Health Sciences Centre
PRINCIPLE DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Working collaboratively with the multidisciplinary clinical team, the Social Worker II:
-
Conducts comprehensive social work and psychosocial assessments with children and youth, occasionally accused young persons and young offenders, families, parent-child interactions and reviews of relevant history and file materials and obtains collateral information from other professional involved with the family.

Reviews information from the members of the multidisciplinary team, other key informants and data sources, weighs pertinent information elicited from psychosocial evaluations and risk assessments, develops treatment, necessary protective measures, disposition and other recommendations, authoring and submitting initial and follow-up court and other reports within prescribed timeframes.

Attends and provides documentary and expert evidence to the Courts and other hearings and tribunals, as required.

Completes other consultation reports and, as required, provides verbal reports immediately where warranted.

Maintains patient records by methods such as documenting patient assessments, charting patient information, preparing progress notes and reports in accordance with established standards, policies and procedures to meet regulatory requirements and documenting for future reference.

Provides comprehensive therapeutic clinical counseling services to children/youth and families occasionally and where appropriate, acts as a resource by providing education and information regarding community resources and access to these resources, facilitating referrals where appropriate, and facilitating the development of community resources by identifying services needed to support families.

Develops, coordinates and delivers in-services, presentations, psycho-educational and/or training related to the assigned clinical specialty area by methods such as collaborating with members of the interdisciplinary team, determining relevant content and required audiovisual/handout aids, conducting literature searches and planning and coordinating seminars.

Initiates, develops and carries out research activities and program planning and development relevant to the needs of the patient, families, hospital and community in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team by methods such as identifying current trends/gaps in literature, writing research proposals.

Follows through with research methodology, disseminates research findings and ensures clinical practices and protocols are consistent with research findings.

Maintains broad development in the Social Work profession by methods such as reviewing literature in the assigned clinical specialty area, consulting with clinical and community experts within the field, evaluating clinical practice and participating in professional development activities in order to improve care through new practices.

Acts as a mentor, coach and educational resource to early career professionals and learners.

Participates as a member of internal and external committees, task forces and working groups, as assigned. Submits workload data within prescribed timeframes.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Masters of Social Work Degree from an accredited university.
-
Member in good standing of the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers.
-
Current First Aid/CPR Level ‘C’.
-
Current enhanced security clearance (criminal reference check) for vulnerable populations administered by Canadian Police Information Centre (CPIC).
-
3-5 years clinical social work experience in an outpatient mental health setting working with children and their families.
-
In-depth knowledge of DSM-IV TR diagnostic criteria for psychiatric disorders most prevalent in the child and adolescent subpopulations.
-
Highly developed clinical skills in interviewing, psycho-social and risk assessment, treatment (individual, group and family therapy), crisis intervention and cognitive behavioural therapy with children-youth and families.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of the developmental stages of children-youth and within the family life cycle and the psychosocial issues that may occur in relation to this.
-
Demonstrated knowledge of Ontario Mental Health Act, Child and Family Services Act, Young Offenders Act (Canada), Health Care Consent Act, Powers of Attorney Act, Substitute Decisions Act, Personal Health Information Protection Act and other relevant legislation.

Extensive knowledge of evidence based practice and current experience in the assessment and treatment of complex mental health disorders in children-youth.

In-depth knowledge of community-based and regional mental health and other relevant resources is essential.

Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary team of psychiatrists, allied health and nursing professionals, other agency, legal and court representatives.
