Reporting to the Manager, Wellness, (Manager) the Dispute Resolution Consultant (DRC) ensures the Government of Nunavut’s (GN) workplaces are healthy, safe and respectful and comply with relevant legislative requirements. The incumbent is responsible for promoting respectful work environments across the GN, including providing informal conflict/dispute resolution and management counselling and services; conducting and advising on formal and informal investigations, mediation/dispute resolution services and guidance; undertaking/conducting harassment and/or conflict prevention initiatives; including early intervention in the resolution of employee/workplace issues, undertaking workplace restoration work following investigations. The Dispute Resolution Consultant (DRC) will ensure that Inuit Societal Values (ISV) are incorporated in conflict resolution processes, particular focus will be given to the ISV of Inuuqatigiitsiarniq, respecting others, relationships and caring for people.

  • Provides linkage between the client department and the employee in identifying interests of all parties in a dispute
  • Recommends potential options for early resolution
  • Offers coaching, remedial and follow-up services to supervisors/managers
  • Identifies training requirements while working collaboratively with Employee Relations Consultants to select the most effective approach for specific cases of conflict
  • Gathers and provides requisite support/briefing documentation to the appropriate Employee Relations Consultant after all reasonable avenues for informal resolution of the issue/conflict have been exhausted
  • Provides expert advice and guidance to departments in handling employer/employee disputes/conflicts, and their respective resolution/mitigation strategies
  • Provides accurate interpretation of law, collective agreement and human rights legislation affecting the employer-employee relationship as related to the conflict/dispute resolution process

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through a recognized post-secondary degree in Mediation, Conflict Resolution, Labour Studies, Organizational Conflict and Management, industrial relations, or related field plus a minimum of 3 years’ experience in alternative dispute resolution, conflict management or related field. Workplace restoration training and workplace investigation are also required. A Mediation certificate and membership with the Alternative Dispute Resolution Institute of Ontario and Canada are considered an asset.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages of Nunavut. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut’s official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
