We have an excellent opportunity to join one of Waterloo Region’s top employers as an Actuarial Technical Lead in our Ontario Mutual Automobile Plan (OMAP) department. OMAP is a department which provides product, underwriting, actuarial, regulatory, and systems support to a group of Ontario Mutual Insurance Association (OMIA) companies that underwrite automobile insurance in Ontario and have elected to do a common filing with the Financial Services Regulatory Authority (FSRA). This group of 30 mutual insurance companies writes a combined annual automobile insurance premium base of approximately $400M.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Actuarial Manager, OMAP, the Actuarial Technical Lead is responsible for the delivery of actuarial rate indications and statistical models. This role supports the Ontario Mutuals’ shared automobile insurance product. The Actuarial Technical Lead is responsible for independently investigating complex pricing and performance issues, identifying root causes and recommending corrective actions. The role collaborates with both internal and external business partners, managing end-to-end projects. The role acts as a technical resource to the team, reviewing and approving actuarial work while providing technical guidance.

This position offers a hybrid work schedule.

The Role:

As the successful candidate, you will:

  • Lead the process for auto rate indications and rate change filings in response to the regulatory requirements
  • Independently execute complex actuarial analysis, build predictive models, and monitor auto pricing performance KPIs
  • Partners closely with business leaders, anticipates partner needs, and proactively proposes solutions aligned with organizational objectives
  • Serves as a trusted advisor with OMAP’s actuarial team, providing input on product, underwriting rules and growth strategy
  • Monitors industry and regulatory development, assessing implications for internal models and processes
  • Manages end-to-end projects, including scope, timelines, deliverables, and implementation

Your Skills and Qualifications:

  • A degree in actuarial science, statistics, or another related field
  • ACAS designation preferred, FCAS designation considered an asset
  • 5 years’ experience in an actuarial role, including 2 years of experience in automobile industry
  • Prior experience completing auto rate filings with regulators considered an asset
  • Prior experience with non-PPV automobile lines of business would be an asset
  • Proficiency with excel and business intelligence tools (i.e. Power BI)
  • Experience with programming and analytics tools (i.e. SQL, R, Python or other actuarial software)
  • Strong communication skills such as presenting data to non-technical audiences
  • Strong analytical judgement to guide effective, practical solutions achieving operational goals

Salary Range

The expected base salary range for this position is $125,000 - $150,000.

The actual salary will be determined based on factors including but not limited to, market conditions, relevant experience, job related knowledge, skills, abilities, qualifications, and education.

Employees may also have the opportunity to participate in incentive programs to earn additional compensation. Incentive compensation is tied to established business and individual performance targets.
