Job Summary
Queen’s University is currently accepting applications to fill an opening for a Part-Time Veterinary Technician to work weekends and holidays (approximately 14 hours per week) in Animal Care Services.

Hourly Rate: $25/hour + 4% vacation pay = $26/hour

Opportunity Details:

  • Scheduled shifts, rotating every other weekend. Opportunity for additional hours during summer months and during the winter holidays.

Job Description
Job Duties:

  • Provide daily care and husbandry for laboratory animals.

  • Provide technical support as required, i.e. post-surgical monitoring and supportive care.

  • Provide clinical health reports daily to the Veterinarian.

  • Provide animal treatments under veterinary guidance.

  • Prepare and dispense the correct diet for specific species according to the animal’s biological needs, using scales, volumetric devices and including sterilization procedure.

  • Recognize and record deviations from normal health and behaviour, reporting any abnormalities to Veterinary Services.

  • Accurately identify, handle, and restrain animals within the facility.

  • Must be aware of the basic principles of sterility, quarantining, conditioning, and epidemiological control.

  • Handling and providing for the needs of special husbandry cases:

o Biohazards
o Sterile environment

  • Lifting heavy animals and equipment e.g. bags of food, paper, cleaning fluids, caging. - These skills are applied to the husbandry of common laboratory animals.

Requirements:

  • The incumbent must be a registered veterinary technician (RVT).

  • The incumbent must have a patient, humane, and caring attitude towards all animals, combined with the strength and knowledge to handle them successfully and aware of the basic principles of sterility, quarantining, conditioning and epidemiological control.

  • Commitment to be at work on-time for each shift.

  • Strong communications skills are required (speak, read, and write in English).

  • Ability to work independently and in a group as a member of the Animal Care Services team.

  • Ability to lift 18 kg (40lbs)

  • Physically capable of performing the duties listed above.

  • Knowledge of the Canadian Council of Animal Care (CCAC), the Canadian Association for Laboratory Science (CALAS), the Animals for Research Act and the University Animal Care Committee is an asset.
