Job Description:

DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

Operational Risk Management (“ORM”) is accountable for the design and implementation of TDBG’s Operational Risk Management Framework that sets out the Bank’s governance, policies, processes and practices for the identification, assessment, reporting, mitigation and control of operational risk. Within this context, Corporate Operational Risk Management (CORM) acts as an independent risk management function responsible for ensuring the Bank has an effective operational risk management program to manage risk within the Bank's risk appetite.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES

CUSTOMER

  • Act as a subject matter expert and provide guidance on the appropriate treatment and classification of internal operational risk loss event data
  • Proactively work with ORM risk partners to ensure the escalation and reporting of operational risk events is compliant with relevant policies, standards and practices
  • Assist the risk management community in the use of the operational risk event data application (MERLIN), including training, managing access rights, guidance in the use of the application and in the rules for recording data in the application
  • Support technology solution projects and change requests, related to the operational risk event data and MERLIN operations, by working with technology and risk partners to ensure successful implementations (including reviewing business requirements, conducting Business Acceptance Testing for sign-offs, etc.)
  • Lead, motivate and develop relationships with internal and external business partners/stakeholders to develop and nurture productive working relationships
  • Actively manage relationships within and across various business lines, corporate and/or oversight functions and ensure alignment with enterprise requirements

SHAREHOLDER

  • Adhere to enterprise frameworks, standards or methodologies, relate or applicable to Corporate ORM (CORM) Internal Loss Event Data (ILED) activities
  • Execute on and support the operational risk loss event data quality and attestation process through the verification of data and assessing compliance with published data standards and guidance
  • Perform completeness checks and assessments for operational risk loss event data, captured in the loss event database and prepare segment summary reports
  • Identify issues, gaps and emerging trends with ILED data quality and recommend solutions and work closely with ORM risk partners in developing appropriate approaches to address data quality issues
  • Ensures ILED programs/practices are well managed and communicated, comply with Bank and regulatory requirements, and align with organizational priorities
  • Exercises discretion in managing correspondence, information and all matters of confidentiality related to the ILED program and escalates issues where appropriate
  • Ensures ILED operations are in compliance with applicable internal and external requirements (e.g., segregation of duties, approvals, physical control of assets, etc.)
  • Participates in cross-functional/enterprise initiatives as an ILED subject matter expert, helping to ensure the Bank's policy/standards/procedures are always followed, and provides guidance on complex situations
  • Conducts meaningful analysis at the functional or enterprise level and using results to draw conclusions, make recommendations, and to assess the effectiveness of programs/policies/practices
  • Monitors and assesses productivity, efficiency and efficacy within CORM ILED and recommends and implements continuous improvements, where opportunities exist
  • Keeps abreast of emerging issues, trends, and evolving regulatory requirements related to internal loss event data, and assesses potential impacts (risk/opportunities)
  • Maintains a culture of risk management and control, supported by effective processes in alignment with risk appetite

EMPLOYEE / TEAM

  • Participate fully as a member of the CORM ILED team, support a positive work environment that promotes service to the business, quality, innovation and teamwork and ensure timely communication of issues and points of interest
  • Provide thought leadership and industry knowledge, and participate in knowledge transfer within the ILED team and CORM as a whole
  • Stay current on emerging trends/developments and continuously build ILED knowledge, related tools, approaches, practices and techniques; and maintain awareness of operational risk management concepts, trends, regulatory developments and industry standards such as the ORX Reporting Standards
  • Participate in personal performance management and development activities, including cross training within the CORM ILED team
  • Keep the team informed and up-to-date about the status/progress of projects and/or all relevant or useful information related to day-to-day CORM ILED activities
  • Support the CORM ILED team on strategic or tactical initiatives and deliverables and contribute to the team's overall development of skills and capabilities through mentorship of others, sharing knowledge/experiences and leveraging best practices
  • Support ongoing risk measurement activities by acquiring, analyzing and reporting relevant operational risk loss event data
  • Contribute to a fair, positive and equitable environment that supports a diverse workforce

BREADTH & DEPTH

  • Expert level professional role requiring in-depth knowledge/expertise in the risk management and ILED space
  • Strong relationship management skills with the ability to challenge and influence change, strong written/verbal communication skills and attention to detail
  • Ability to integrate the broader organizational context into advice and solutions
  • Applies best practices and professional experience/judgment to implement process improvements and acts as a subject matter expert in the ILED space
  • Leads projects of moderate to high complexity with a track record of implementing value-added process/program improvements; leads end-to-end processes or functional programs and contributed new solutions/recommendations for programs
  • Solves complex problems requiring the analysis of multiple variables, including consultation with multiple stakeholders
  • Reviews, assesses, and interprets guidelines, standards, policies, procedures and the results of analysis to inform/influence decision making at senior levels
  • Builds stakeholder alignment when leading projects and activities; may provide process and subject matter advice at senior levels
  • Identifies and leads problem resolution for complex issues at all levels
  • Generally reports to a Manager or above

EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Undergraduate degree or technical certificate and/or
  • 5+ years relevant experience
