As the Switcher/Director, you are a team leader in the control room and a key part of our visual production team within the newsroom.

You are responsible for directing CBC News live, breaking and packaged programs using Ross Overdrive or other software based video production systems. Working collaboratively with your editorial and production colleagues, you will have a high degree of autonomy coding iNews lineups, building graphics, directing on-air talent and operating control room systems.

You will also be responsible for editing video using non-linear editing software for TV, streaming platforms and social media. Within this, there is latitude for creativity, initiative and independent judgement while keeping to CBC’s journalistic standards.

We are a 24 hour a day, 7 day a week organization intent on being there when the audience needs us. The primary schedule for this position will be weekends and evenings with two days off during the week. You could be required to work early mornings, evenings or shifts that fall on public holidays. You will report directly to the Senior Manager, Production Services.

THE SPECIFICS:

You will work closely with your production teams to plan and execute daily show requirements and ensure that the work adheres to the CBC/Radio-Canada Journalistic Programming policies and standards.

You have a passion for delivering breaking and important news to audiences when and where they need it. You are a team leader and collaborator. You are able to make a number of technical and editorial decisions in a high stress and fast-paced environment to ensure consistency with our brand. You are a sociable person, who makes it easy to integrate into various teams. You have solid editorial judgement and actively participate in various production duties. You are creative and able to bring new ideas to the table. You are flexible and can easily adapt to changing situations. You embrace and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful workplace.

Some of your tasks include:

  • Participating in the conception, planning and development of the program or segment being directed
  • Editing, packaging and delivering shows or modular content for playback on linear or non-linear content platforms
  • Providing on-air, participants and members of the production crew with clear direction throughout the program.
  • Organising and, if required, rehearsing all elements of the program to ensure that the on-air talent and crew are fully prepared.
  • Switching and mixing audio and video elements involved in the production through Ross Overdrive or other software based programs.
  • Editing, assembling, outputting and/or delivering content to ensure the highest quality consistent branding and program continuity.
  • Ensuring the technical quality of all newscast components and provide feedback to peers as part of the production
  • Responsible for daily follow ups and Continuous Improvement production reports.
  • Demonstrating leadership skills when participating in the planning, development and execution of programs.
  • Assisting and collaborating with fellow Switcher Directors to ensure all daily production requirements are met.
  • Providing feedback to your team to assist in their performance.

We are looking for a candidate with the following:

  • A combination of education and experience equivalent to a college diploma in production and post-production techniques, plus five (5) years of practical and relevant control room experience.
  • Sound knowledge of the Ross Overdrive video switching systems.
  • Three (3) or more years experience directing live news productions.

  • Ability to work well under pressure for extended periods during live broadcasts.
  • Live timing of live productions in an Assistant Director role.
  • Advanced non-linear editing skills in an Avid or Adobe environment.
  • Operation of software based live production tools such as Vidigo, Vmix or OBS.
