The Deputy Sheriff I is a uniformed position within the Department of Justice and Public Safety, considered a “Position of Trust” and is a designated as a Peace Officer pursuant to Section 2 of the Criminal Code of Canada. The Deputy Sheriff I officer reports directly to the Deputy Sheriff II Supervisor and works in all levels of the Law Courts in Newfoundland and Labrador. Incumbents are frontline officers who ensure the effective and safe operation of the court system and are responsible for the safety and security of all who participate within it (Judges, staff, legal counsel, victims of crime, accused persons and prisoners). Duties include Prisoner Escort, Court Security, Guard duty, Secure Prisoner Transport, Point-of-Entry Screening, Jury Administration/Security and Service of Documents. The Deputy Sheriff I will also be responsible for conducting individual body and court facility searches, observing and monitoring prisoner and public activity, conducting risk assessments on accused and other patrons of the court, executing warrants of arrest, releasing prisoners following appropriate checks of outstanding charges/jurisdictional holds; screening and escorting visitors into restricted areas; directing public and legal professionals to appropriate courtrooms; providing security for court exhibits. Other duties assigned as required

Screening Criteria

  1. Completion of a post-secondary diploma in law enforcement or criminology (equivalencies will be considered)
  2. Relevant experience in enforcement, security, corrections, paramilitary or military

Assessment Criteria

  1. Knowledge of the criminal justice systems as it applies to various levels of the court.
  2. Knowledge of the use of force framework principles
  3. Knowledge of relevant legislation and regulations (Asset)
  4. Ability to effectively exchange information.
  5. Ability to make decisions.
  6. Ability to manage time and tasks.
  7. Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  8. Ability to work in a team.
  9. Professionalism

Conditions of Offer

  1. Proof of valid Class 5 Driver’s license
  2. Recent and satisfactory Enhanced Security Clearance Check
  3. Completion of a successful (4:45 minutes or less) Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE).
  4. Recent and satisfactory Medical/Psychological assessment will be required (including vision and hearing acuity test). Arrangements will be made by the Selection Committee. Associated costs will be the responsibility of the candidate.

Conditions of Acceptance

  1. Willing to accept travel throughout the province, including Circuit Courts.
  2. Willing to accept evenings, weekends and holidays (occasional)
  3. Willing to accept 24-7-365 on-call availability (short notice)
  4. Acknowledges requirement for completion of use of force framework certification
  5. Acknowledges requirement for carrying restricted and prohibited weapons.
  6. Acknowledges requirement for Use of Force
  7. Acknowledges requirement for maintaining certifications as prescribed.
