The Role

At General Motors, we’re transforming mobility through innovation — driving toward a future of zer o crashe s , zero emissions, and zero congestion . As part of this mission, we’re building the next generation of autonomous vehicles and the platforms that power them.

We’re looking for a Systems Engineering Group Leader to join the Autonomous Vehicles Integrity Platform group . This is a high-impact leadership role responsible for guiding a team of talented system engineers in the development of fault detection, fault management, and integrity strategies for advanced sensing and compute t echnologies — including cameras, radars, and other ADAS/autonomous driving sensors.

This role offers a unique opportunity to shape the technical direction of critical systems while growing and mentoring a team of systems engineers. You’ll collaborate across software, hardware, and validation teams to ensure our sensing systems are robust, reliable, and ready for the road. If you're passionate about leading through influence, driving technical excellence, and developing future leaders, this is the role for you.

What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

  • Lead and develop a high-performing engineering team focused on systems and requirements development for autonomous and ADAS sensor and compute diagnostics. Provide ongoing coaching, performance feedback, and career development support while fostering a culture aligned with GM’s Core Values and Winning Behaviors.

  • Own and evolve systems engineering processes , including planning, functional decomposition, requirements authoring, and supplier engagement. Ensure alignment with broader software development workflows and program milestones.

  • Drive cross-functional collaboration with Software, QA, Platform, and Hardware teams to define and validate diagnostic software components — including built-in test monitors, recovery strategies, and service routines — ensuring robust testing and system integrity.

  • Partner with program leaders and product owners to ensure scrum teams are properly resourced and equipped to deliver high-quality requirements and test coverage within sprint cycles.

  • Monitor diagnostic performance and lead issue resolution , working closely with execution teams to identify root causes and implement improvements.

  • Manage operational planning , including budgeting, resource allocation, and coordination across internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient execution and minimal duplication of effort.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

  • 10+ years of experience in systems and/or software development, with a focus on high-integrity systems.

  • 3+ years of experience leading software development teams, ideally within automotive, embedded systems, or similar domains.

  • Deep understanding of systems engineering principles, traceability, and the importance of quality from the start of the software lifecycle.

  • Hands-on experience with software testing across multiple levels — from unit testing to full system validation.

  • Proven track record of delivering complex, high-integrity products on time and with exceptional quality.

  • Demonstrated success in mentoring and developing engineering talent.

  • Practical experience with both Waterfall and Agile development methodologies.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and negotiation skills.

  • Willingness to travel occasionally.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field.

What Will Give You a Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

  • Experience with vehicle sensing systems, Linux platforms , high-performance compute platforms, and automated driving or driver assistance technologies.

  • Familiarity with automotive diagnostics and fault management systems.

  • Knowledge of safety analysis and implementation, including ISO 26262 compliance.

  • Experience managing outsourced engineering partners and automotive software suppliers.

  • Prior involvement in employee performance management, hiring, and other administrative leadership functions.

  • Master’s degree in a relevant technical or management discipline.
