Job Description:

Overview

Reporting to the Manager, Infrastructure Asset Planning, the Sidewalk Inspector (Student) will participate as a member of the Asset Management team, conducting inspections as part of the annual sidewalk inspection program. This position will be carried out in all weather conditions. Every effort will be made for alternative work in the event of rain.

NOTE: Initial selection for available positions will be for applications received prior to March 13, 2026. Applicants received after this date will be kept in an application pool for future opportunities.

(Temporary Full Time for Approximately 4 Months)

Responsibilities

  • Inspection of sidewalks and walkways (approximately 1100 km) within the City of Kitchener from May 2026 to August 2026 in accordance with Municipal Act, 2001, Ontario Regulation 239/02 Minimum Maintenance Standards Section 16.1 and 16.2.
  • Assist in the maintenance of all inspection equipment (vehicles, tricycles, phones, safety items).
  • Report progress and issues, and direct questions to the Program Administrator daily.
  • Plan daily routes, load vehicle, and drive to work site.
    Maintain map, illustrating progress.
  • Direct questions from the public at the Corporate Contact Centre.
  • Complete all required safety training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Education

  • Minimum Grade 12 diploma or equivalent. Preference will be given to candidates currently enrolled as student in a post-secondary Engineering, Geography or GIS program.

Experience

  • Minimum 1 month of related experience.

Additional Requirements

  • Possess a valid MTO G class driver's license in good standing.
  • Provide Drivers Abstract at your own expense as a condition of employment.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Strong attention to detail and organization skills.
    Willing and able to operate an adult sized tricycle for a significant portion of each workday.
  • Able to lift tricycle (approximately 50 lbs) in and out or work vehicle.
  • Able to multi-task, including the ability to collect data and information while maintaining personal and public safety.
  • Be prepared to be trained in work procedures and the operation of all related equipment.
  • Ability to participate as an effective team member.
  • Proficient in the use of a computer/phone.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues related to equipment utilized in the performance of this position would be considered an asset.
  • Ability to work in all weather conditions. In the event of rain, all efforts will be made for alternative work.
  • Reliable with a good attitude and employment record.
