Position Highlights

ICBC is one of BC’s largest corporations and one of Canada’s largest property and casualty (P&C) insurers with annual earned premiums of $5.3 billion and $19.1 billion in assets.

ICBC’s actuaries primarily work in two areas: Insurance Pricing and Corporate Actuarial.

  • Insurance Pricing has responsibility for overall rate recommendations for both Basic and Optional Insurance products, rate design, program evaluation, and other insurance modeling projects.
  • Corporate Actuarial has responsibility for the estimation of ICBC’s claims reserves, determining future claims trends, financial reporting, and capital adequacy testing to determine ICBC’s internal capital management MCT targets.
  • ICBC’s actuaries have opportunities to work in both areas through the internal rotation program.

We currently have multiple opportunities for Actuarial Analysts I or Actuarial Analysts II to join one of our teams in Corporate Actuarial and Insurance Pricing areas. As an Actuarial Analyst, you will have responsibility for a variety of items depending on your team, potentially including:

  • Estimating IBNR reserves, future emergence, and claims forecasting for ICBC’s material damage or injury coverages.
  • Estimating rate adequacy, premium and exposure forecasting, responding to regulatory and government requests, and estimating the pricing impacts of potential benefits.
  • Developing and refining pricing segmentation, emerging market segments, new products to support corporate wide priorities, and supporting rate applications to our regulator.
  • Supporting functions such as financial reporting, capital adequacy testing, claims data preparation, reconciliation and validation
  • Other duties may also be assigned depending on the successful candidate’s training and experience.

Key accountabilities include:

  • Acquires data and performs analysis with guidance from supervisor.
  • Mentor junior analysts.
  • Conducts peer reviews of other analysts work to ensure accuracy and compliance to standards.
  • Conducts data reasonability checks and remedies simple data issues.
  • Under the guidance of their supervisor, selects appropriate methods, assumptions and data for analysis.
  • Identifies opportunities for improvement to analytical work.
  • Understands and translates vague requests for analysis into specific terms.
  • Writes technical and client-oriented reports and presents analysis results to internal and external customers (manager level) in understandable terms.

Position Requirements

  • You have a post-secondary degree and a solid knowledge of actuarial principles along with at least two years' experience in a variety of actuarial work areas.
  • You have completed at least four CAS exams (or completed CIA Capstone Exam with SST), and you are actively pursuing your Fellowship with the CAS, CIA or an equivalent organization.
  • People describe you as a team player.
  • You have excellent verbal and written communication skills in English.
  • Advanced knowledge of MS Excel is required.
  • Exposure to ResQ, Python, SQL and VBA are considered assets.

Work arrangements defined:

  • Hybrid 8 – you will work a minimum of 8 days in a 4-week period at your primary office headquarters (typically 2 days per week). The remaining days will be remote within British Columbia.
