This position may be funded by the Canada Summer Jobs grant.

Nature & Scope

YMCA Camp Kanannaq is located on Nadsilnich (West) Lake, a 20 minutes drive from Prince George, BC. It is situated on 200 acres of beautiful forested lakefront property. We have a beautiful waterfront where campers spend part of each day swimming or boating, and many forested program spaces for activities such as archery, fire-building, and orienteering. During July and August, Camp Kanannaq offers day camp programs for youth ages 5-17, with one week camps for youth ages 5-15, and two and three week leadership development programs. In the spring and fall, Camp Kanannaq offers day and overnight Outdoor Education programs.

Camp Kanannaq operates as a day camp, and does not offer accommodation to staff during regular programming. Our limited indoor spaces and facilities provide a rustic setting for those who enjoy working outside. Camp Kanannaq employs 15-20 staff during the summer, with a smaller team of about 3-5 during Outdoor Education seasons. Successful Camp Kanannaq staff are self-motivated individuals whose ambition is to help children and youth develop in an outdoor camp setting, who are ready to work hard outdoors in all conditions, and who believe in 5-star customer service for all participants.

YMCA Camp Kanannaq is seeking an individual to fill the role of Coordinator, Camp Programs.

Reporting directly to the Director of Camping and Outdoor Education, the Coordinator of Camp Programs is a key team member at the YMCA BC. This person will be responsible, assisting the Director in the leadership and guidance of camp teams, programs and services to include Outdoor Education, Camp Kanannaq Day Camp Programs according to YMCA and BC Camps Association guidelines and policies. This position will coordinate the YMCA BC Camp Services and Programs; including overseeing all operations, standards, programs and services in regards to Outdoor Education, Waterfront Programs, and Youth Programs. The Coordinator will provide leadership to the development and delivery of high-quality, educational programming and camping, and will build and maintain relationships with our families and delivery partners. This person is responsible for assisting in all operations including recruiting, hiring, training and managing staff; overseeing aspects of the budget; programming; maintaining facilities, equipment and programs; assuring YMCA standards and procedures are taking place to follow YMCA policies and procedures and to integrate the YMCA Core Values of Honesty, Caring, Respect and Responsibility to provide high quality programs.

Major Responsibilities**-in this position, you will:**

  • Plan, implement, prepare and maintain designated programs, equipment and activities; to a high standard- including training staff
  • Lead and facilitate our YMCA Day Camp Program and Outdoor Education program for community and school groups
  • Oversee day-to-day programming and activities of camp and outdoor education
  • Provide coaching and mentorship to the Camp staff teams
  • Assume responsibility for all on-site operations
  • Supervise camper drop-off and pick-up, communicate with camper families and school groups
  • Ensure all YMCA Child Protection and YMCA Camp Kanannaq Policies, and BC Camps Accreditation Standards are implemented and followed, through leading by example and effective communication

Qualification**-you bring:**

  • 3+ years combined of post-secondary education in a relevant field (such as education, outdoor recreation, biology) and experience in camps, youth recreation, and/or outdoor education
  • Demonstrated supervisory and YMCA Camps & Outdoor Education experience is an asset
  • Minimum of Standard First Aid and CPR-C
  • Have a current National Lifeguard certification and/or Class 2 Driver’s License or equivalent; if not, must be willing and able to obtain at least one of these certifications
  • Successful candidate will be required to provide 3 satisfactory references
  • Successful candidates will be required to provide a current and satisfactory Criminal Record check with a Vulnerable sector search issued no later than six (6) months preceding the start date.
