Position Description
Purpose
The Occupational Therapist at the CBE plays an important role in supporting student participation, engagement, and success within the school environment. Using a collaborative strength-based approach, the Occupational Therapist works alongside educators, families, and multidisciplinary teams to enhance students’ access to learning through specialized, targeted and universal strategies.
Accountability
This job is accountable for delivering school-based occupational therapy services that support student participation and independence through assessment, strategy implementation, collaboration with educators, and adherence to professional documentation and practice standards.
Major responsibilities
- Assess functional performance to identify student strengths and challenges related to participation in their educational program within the school setting, including:
- Sensory processing for learning and regulation
- Fine and gross motor development
- Written output and productivity
- Assistive technology for learning
- Functional life skills and participation in school routines
- Play, social, and leisure skills
- Positioning
- Provide evidence-informed strategies to promote student independence, engagement, and well-being across diverse learning environments.
- Assist in the identification and implementation of environmental modifications, adaptive equipment, and assistive technology to support student participation.
- Support educators through coaching, modeling, and professional development to integrate occupational therapy principles into classroom practices.
- Collaborate with school teams to develop individualized and tiered strategies that align with students’ educational goals and available resources.
- Effectively use communication and time management skills to schedule, collaborate and share information to guide service delivery.
- Maintain clear and comprehensive documentation of assessments, progress, and recommendations that align with Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT) and employer guidelines.
- Stay current with best practices in pediatric and school-based occupational therapy, applying research and professional development to support innovative service delivery within a school setting.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of inclusive and accessible learning environments through initiatives and capacity-building efforts.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Occupational Therapy.
- Registered, or eligible for registration with the Alberta College of Occupational Therapists (ACOT).
- A minimum of four years of experience as an Occupational Therapist is an asset, preferably in pediatric or school-based settings.
- Experience collaborating within a multidisciplinary team in an educational context.
- Alberta Aids to Daily Living (AADL) authorization status is an asset.
Demonstrated Skills and Competencies
- Strong interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a team.
- Proficient in using technology for communication, resource development, and documentation (e.g., Google Suite, Microsoft Office, video conferencing, electronic files).
- Effective scheduling, time management, and caseload prioritization.
- Commitment to professional learning and continuous development.
- Experience implementing a tiered model of service delivery, from universal classroom strategies to individualized strategies for students with complex needs. Ability to adapt and respond flexibly within a dynamic school environment.
This job requires personal transportation for travel between work sites.
