Join our dynamic team in beautiful Penetanguishene - a town with a picturesque and protected harbour, and a rich heritage and culture. We look forward to welcoming dedicated maintenance mechanics who will conduct general maintenance and groundskeeping, as well as escort external tradespeople throughout our facilities while they perform skilled trades work. Given this position works with inmate helpers, a shift premium will be added to every pay.

About the job

Working as part of a small maintenance team at the Central North Correctional Centre, you will enjoy a variety of tasks as well as a steady work schedule (Mondays-Fridays). In this role you can expect to:

  • Escort and help skilled tradespeople while they perform a variety of maintenance, renovation and repair tasks
  • Perform general maintenance and building upkeep duties such as changing light bulbs, painting, etc.
  • Operate and maintain various pumps/burners, water softeners, kitchen and grounds equipment
  • Groundskeeping such as clearing snow and mowing grass
  • Supervise inmate helpers and report their conduct

What you bring to the team

Mandatory:

  • You are certified in one of the skilled trades as recognized by the Ontario Government, or you have equivalent experience
  • You have a current First Aid and Heartsaver certificate, or the ability to obtain these before hire

Skilled Trades Knowledge and Experience:

You can:

  • perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks (e.g. painting, carpentry, welding, lock repair)
  • operate and maintain heating, ventilation, air conditioning and fire systems, as well as instrumentation and control systems
  • interpret, organize and complete blueprints, schematics, specification diagrams and drawings

Legislative Knowledge:

You can:

  • interpret and apply relevant legislation, municipal by-laws and codes, and provincial building codes
  • obtain and apply correctional facility security requirements (i.e., lockouts, tagouts and elevated work procedures)
  • understand and apply the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), Occupational Health and Safety Act, and institutional security practices and procedures to recognize workplace hazards and security breaches, and ensure prompt corrective action

Communication Skills:

You can:

  • discuss work projects with others and ensure work is completed on time
  • complete reports on assigned projects and maintain accurate logs
  • give instructions in the safe use of power equipment and hand tools
  • access information about warranty and service agreements
  • prepare reports and respond to inquiries

Computer Skills:

  • You are able to use computer applications and automated systems
