Community Services Team Leader - Landscape Services and Active Pathways

Are you ready to step into a role that combines hands-on operational oversight with seasonal project management? The Team Leader position offers an exciting and dynamic work schedule, shifting between two key service areas.
From April to October, you will provide supervision and leadership for landscaping crews maintaining turf, shrub beds, and naturalized areas at City facilities including libraries, transit stations, and firehalls.
During the winter months, from November to March, you'll transition to leading weekend shifts overseeing city-wide Active Pathways snow and ice control operations. This is an opportunity to directly influence the quality of our public spaces and winter mobility, ensuring effective service delivery and championing our cultural commitments.
This role is key to ensuring the effective and efficient maintenance and operations of our public assets. You will instruct and lead staff performing a wide variety of manual duties, designing work plans, and ensuring adherence to approved standards and schedules. Success in this role requires a commitment to teamwork, actively encouraging staff consultation and participation in operational decision-making. You will also be the main point of contact for clients, ensuring ongoing satisfaction and communicating work plan progress. This position is integral to cultivating our branch's vision and continuous improvement efforts, all while embodying the cultural commitments of being Safe, Helpful, Accountable, Integrated, and Excellent.
What will you do?
- Develop seasonal work plans, set priorities, and ensure implementation aligns with standard operating procedures
- Conduct seasonal staff evaluations and complete seasonal work plan briefings and reports
- Organize new employee orientation and ensure compliance with safety training and toolbox talks
- Monitor and ensure adherence to budget compliance
- Monitor and ensure compliance with Occupational Health & Safety (OH&S) requirements
- Report and provide updates to your supervisor and upper management regarding any safety concerns
- Manage and inspect internal and external paperwork for completion
- Accurately track inventory and update necessary spreadsheets (Enviso)
- Maintain ongoing communication with community partners and internal clients
- Conduct seasonal meetings to ensure agreed-upon service levels are being met
Qualifications:
- Completion of a University Bachelor’s degree in sciences, business, or a related field.
- Three (3) years of work experience as required by the area of specialization, such as parks construction or maintenance; building, parks, recreational, zoological, arboricultural or horticultural operations; landscaping or heavy equipment
Skills required for success:
- Ability to lead and develop effective work crews, providing training and education in assigned functional areas
- Ability to implement the annual work plan and ensure management operations are followed and applied in the area of specialization
- Ability to solve problems and make independent decisions, such as the delegation of daily work to front-line staff
- Extensive knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in operational areas
- Knowledge of the operation of specific equipment used in assigned areas (e.g., mowers, sprayers, front-end loaders, dump trucks)
- Understanding of recoverable works within the City and ability to communicate with a variety of business partners
- Experience estimating labour, equipment, and materials for landscape projects
- Knowledge of transportation of dangerous goods and truck routes (where applicable)
- Technical expertise to advise on significant decisions, such as the choice of product and locations for front-line weed control activities
- Knowledge and adherence to external regulations, engaging with regulatory bodies like the Province of Alberta (pesticide applicators guidelines) and Federal pesticide regulations, an Alberta Pesticide Applicators License is considered an asset.
- Ability to inspect and approve work completed by crews and/or contractors
- Demonstrated ability to communicate and deal effectively with the public, civic departments, and outside organizations
- Knowledge of City/Department policies, procedures, standards, and relevant legislation (i.e., OH&S, WHMIS)
- Ability to assist in the management of financial resources

Conditions of Employment:
- Valid Alberta Class 5 driver's licence (or provincial equivalent). Obtaining and maintaining a City Driver's permit is a requirement of this position
- Successful candidates will be fit for a respirator, and compliance with the City of Edmonton's Code of Practice for Respiratory Protective Equipment, including medical monitoring, is a requirement of this position
- Compliance with the City of Edmonton’s safety standards for Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), such as wearing steel-toe boots, gloves, goggles, sunscreen and coveralls
- Possession of Standard First Aid Certificate
Work Environment:
- The role involves working outdoors in various weather conditions and terrains
- Exposure to environmental conditions, including extreme temperatures, inclement weather, dust, noise, light variation, vibrations, chemicals, animals, and exposure to mechanical and electrical hazards may occur
- This role requires completion of repetitive and strenuous tasks such as standing, walking, kneeling, bending, stooping, crouching, lifting items up to 20 pounds, pushing, pulling, reaching, using feet/hand control requiring physical stamina and resilience
- The position involves shift work and split shifts
