JOB DESCRIPTION
St. Mary’s School is seeking a dedicated full-time Physical Education Teacher to join our team starting September 1, 2026.
Required Qualifications
The successful candidate must:
- Be a practicing Catholic who actively participates in the sacramental life of the Church and is committed to supporting the mission of Catholic education.
- Hold a valid BC Teaching Certificate.
- Possess a degree, specialization, or significant training in Physical Education, Kinesiology, Human Kinetics, or a related field.
- Demonstrate two years of successful Physical Education teaching experience at the elementary level.
- Have experience coaching school sports teams and organizing athletic programs.
- Demonstrate expertise in teaching a broad range of sports, physical literacy skills, fitness education, and movement activities.
- Have a strong understanding of assessment practices in Physical and Health Education.
- Demonstrate experience supporting diverse learners, including students with learning differences, behavioural challenges, and English Language Learners.
- Exhibit exceptional classroom management and organizational skills.
- Possess strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build positive relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and community partners.
- Demonstrate a commitment to ongoing professional growth and leadership within the school community.
The successful candidate will:
- Design and deliver a comprehensive Kindergarten to Grade 7 Physical Education program aligned with the BC Curriculum and Catholic values.
- Foster a culture of participation, inclusion, effort, sportsmanship, and excellence.
- Maintain high expectations for student behaviour, safety, and engagement.
- Assess and report student progress using effective and meaningful assessment practices.
- Organize and oversee school-wide athletic events, including tournaments, Sports Day, and Track and Field activities.
- Coach a minimum of four school athletic teams annually and attend practices, games, and tournaments outside of instructional hours.
- Establish and maintain partnerships with community organizations and external athletic providers to bring specialized physical education workshops and programs into the school.
- Plan, coordinate, and supervise field trips to alternative physical education learning environments, including activities such as skating, skiing, paddle boarding, swimming, dance, and other experiential learning opportunities.
- Coordinate and lead school participation in charitable athletic initiatives, including fundraising and community engagement activities supporting BC Children's Hospital through the RBC Run for the Cure.
- Collaborate with Grade 7 student leaders and staff to co-organize and facilitate an annual Fun Day for Kindergarten to Grade 7 students, promoting leadership, school spirit, and community building.
- Collaborate closely with classroom teachers, administrators, support staff, and parents to support student success.
- Participate actively in school liturgies, faith formation activities, professional development, and community events.
- Contribute positively to the life and mission of the school through leadership, service, and collaboration.
