Job description and duties

Coast Mountain College (CMTN), Terrace campus, invites applications for a full-time continuing Payroll Specialist. Salary will be in accordance with the BCGEU Support Staff Salary Scale, Level 12: $2,646.00 biweekly plus a comprehensive benefits package.

We are seeking highly skilled, payroll professional to join our HR and Payroll Department. This role goes beyond processing payroll – it’s about building trust, fostering collaboration, and helping us modernize our payroll practices to better serve employees and the College. Duties: Reporting directly to the Payroll Coordinator, the Payroll Specialist provides confidential bi-weekly payroll support and services. Duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Accurately processes end-to-end payroll in compliance with legislation, policies and collective agreements
  • Calculates a variety of payroll deductions, such as but not limited to income tax, pension and benefit premiums
  • Calculates and processes timesheets, seniority lists, and ensures accuracy and compliance
  • Creates and maintains employee record information in the HR Information System (Colleague), ensuring accuracy and integrity of payroll data
  • Partners closely with HR, Finance and other internal teams to ensure transparency and alignment of practices
  • Prepares and maintains payroll documents and reports, such as pension, records of employment, and more.
  • Provides responsive, clear communication and advice to employees, managers and other partners
  • Researches, investigates and resolves document discrepancies, such as but not limited to timesheets.
  • Identifies opportunities to update processes, supporting continuous improvement and efficiency
  • Supports other HR or payroll related projects as required, such as audits, reporting and year-end activities.

Qualifications

  • Two-year diploma (Bachelor’s degree preferred) in Accounting, Business or other related discipline. A combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Payroll Compliance Practitioner (PCP) preferred.
  • Knowledge of full cycle payroll processes, including year-end processes
  • Knowledge of regulations impacting payroll regulations, such as tax rules and compliance requirements
  • One year of experience processing a full cycle of payroll; 3 years preferred.
  • Experience working in a unionized environment and interpreting collective agreements preferred
  • Experience using a complex and integrated payroll system such as Colleague
  • Ability to effectively manage time, prioritize tasks, be self-directed, and work independently
  • Possess a high level of tact, integrity and discretion in handling confidential information
  • Intermediate skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook, and information management system
  • Detail-oriented with strong organizational and proactive problem-solving abilities
  • A collaborative team player who thrives in a fast-paced changing environment
  • Ability to communicate complex information to diverse audiences both verbally and in writing
