Overview

The Accessibility Advisor facilitates academic accommodations for students with permanent or temporary disabilities and medical conditions at Lakehead University. The Advisor ensures compliance with provincial Human Rights legislation and University policy while maintaining the highest standards of student confidentiality and privacy. This role evaluates medical documentation to determine functional limitations and implement appropriate academic accommodations. Acting as a key liaison, and trusted resource, the Advisor collaborates with students and faculty to balance individual accessibility needs with the essential academic requirements of Lakehead University programs. Additionally, the Advisor promotes Student Accessibility Services (SAS) through campus outreach and coordinates access to assistive technologies and financial bursaries.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate medical/psychological documentation to determine eligibility for services.
  • Develop and distribute Confidential Accommodation Forms to relevant instructors.
  • Maintain accurate, real-time records of student data and correspondence within the Clockwork database.
  • Conduct intake sessions to assess student disability related needs and provide ongoing academic coaching (e.g., time management, learning strategies).
  • Guide students through SAS administrative procedures, including test/exam booking and bursary applications (BSWD).
  • Refer students to internal and external mental health supports (e.g., Student Health and Wellness, Good2Talk).
  • Mediate discussions between students and instructors to resolve accommodation-related challenges.
  • Facilitate student transitions by liaising with secondary schools and community partners.
  • Represent SAS at university functions by creating educational materials and delivering presentations to stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Psychology, Social Work, or a related field.
  • Deep understanding of various permanent or temporary disabilities( visible, invisible), medical conditions, and their impact on learning in a post-secondary environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC) and the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act (AODA).
  • Proficiency in Clockwork (or similar disability scheduling software) and familiarity with assistive technologies (e.g., Kurzweil, Dragon, Glean).
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills with the ability to navigate sensitive, confidential conversations with empathy and professionalism.
