As the Detours Engineering Technician 1, you will provide technical support and assistance under the direction of the appropriate supervisor in the Roadway Operations and Detours group. You will be responsible for the safe movement of all users of the transportation network. Primary duties include:

  • Respond to concerns of the general public, elected officials and other City staff received through 3-1-1, email and telephone.
  • Provide responses in writing (email or technical memorandum) or verbally.
  • Ensure all design and setups of temporary traffic controls are in accordance with the City of Calgary Temporary Traffic Control Manual and the national standards to ensure the safety of pedestrians, cyclists, motorists and worksite personnel is being considered.
  • Review, comment and approve third party temporary traffic control plans against The City's Temporary Traffic Control Manual.
  • Manage a designated geographical area within the City, responding to requests from public, contractors and councilors via 311.
  • Manage and authorize activities on the City right of way required were review, approve and issue various types of permits and work orders in Hansen System.
  • Review and implement parking changes.
  • Perform data collection and analysis.
  • Research and identify problems.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • A completed 2 year Civil/Traffic Engineering diploma and at least 1 year of traffic engineering technician experience.
  • Knowledge of and experience using AutoCAD, Geographical Information System (GIS) software and basic proficiency using Microsoft Office (Word and Outlook).
  • Comprehensive understanding of the needs of all users of the transportation network, City policies and bylaws, technical standards and professional practices is required.
  • A valid Class 5 Driver's License (or provincial equivalent) with no more than 6 demerits and no current suspensions or charges pending.
  • Ability to obtain a City of Calgary operator's permit.
  • Experience using Work Order system and knowledge of traffic engineering will be considered assets.
  • Success in this position requires excellent communication skills, strong customer focus, strong analytical and problem-solving skills, and the ability to work with field crews and in a fast-paced environment.

Working Conditions: Exposure to various weather conditions, heavy traffic, and active construction sites.

Workstyle: This position may be eligible to work from home for at least part of the time as one of several flexible work options available to City employees. These arrangements depend on the operational requirements of the role, employee suitability, and are subject to change based on operational needs and corporate direction.

Pre-employment Drug Test: An offer of employment for this position will be conditional on an applicant passing a pre-employment drug test. This test assesses for use of drugs including cannabis. Failure to pass a pre-employment drug test may prevent an applicant from being hired into any safety sensitive position for a period of up to twelve months.

Compensation: Pay Grade 9 $40.18 - 53.76 per hour

Days of Work: This position typically works a 5 day

work week, with 1 day off in each 3 week cycle.

Hours of work: Standard 35 hour work week
