Job Description And Responsibilities Join Interpro Pipe & Steel’s Calgary team as an Automation Specialist! The Automation Specialist supports plant operations by working closely with the maintenance team with onsite projects and troubleshooting. This role is responsible for timely, accurate, and cost-effective execution of automation project management, design, and technical support as defined by all departments. The Automation Specialist leads and assists with automation-related upgrades, system enhancements, and process improvements. This includes collaborating with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to identify needs, develop practical solutions, and ensure systems meet company standards.

  • Program, troubleshoot, and optimize PLC systems including Allen Bradley PLC5, SLC, ControlLogix, and GuardLogix platforms. Diagnose faults, implement corrective actions, and improve control logic to enhance equipment reliability, safety, and production efficiency
  • Develop and implement practical, reliable automation solutions that meet company standards, safety requirements, and operational needs. Collaborate with operations, maintenance, and engineering teams to execute system upgrades and process improvements
  • Perform advanced troubleshooting and maintenance of industrial electrical and electronic systems including DC drives, AC drives, encoders, sensors, crane controls, radio frequency welders, intercom systems, and related automation components
  • Develop, configure, and troubleshoot HMI systems including Allen Bradley PanelView Plus, FactoryTalk View SE, and Proface to ensure proper operator interface functionality and system performance
  • Configure, commission, maintain, and troubleshoot Variable Frequency Drives (VFDs) to support operational performance and equipment reliability
  • Deliver hands-on technical support during equipment breakdowns to minimize downtime and restore operations efficiently
  • Plan and coordinate automation-related projects by identifying required components, sourcing and ordering parts, scheduling work, and supporting project execution
  • Maintain and update electrical drawings, schematics, PLC backups, and technical documentation to ensure accuracy and regulatory compliance
  • Assist with automation-related tasks during scheduled shutdowns, changeovers, and off-shift operations to minimize disruption to plant productivity.
  • Provide on-call and remote troubleshooting support as required to address urgent automation and operational issues

Requirements

  • Diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology (EET), Electronics Engineering Technology, or a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechatronics, Automation, or related discipline)
  • Minimum 3 years of relevant industrial automation experience in a manufacturing or heavy industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on PLC programming and troubleshooting experience, including Allen Bradley/Rockwell platforms such as ControlLogix, GuardLogix, PLC5, SLC, RSLogix, and FactoryTalk View
  • Experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment, industrial processes, and automation control systems
  • Experience with HMI systems and industrial networking
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
  • Strong PLC programming, diagnostics, and control system optimization capability in an industrial setting
  • Solid understanding of electrical theory, industrial power systems, AC & DC drives, instrumentation, and control systems
  • Ability to read and interpret electrical, mechanical, hydraulic, and instrumentation schematics and drawings
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical documentation and specification writing
  • Ability to work in industrial conditions including heat, humidity, fumes, dust, noise, and proximity to operating equipment
