About Island Gold District: Alamos Gold’s Island Gold District will become one of the largest and lowest-cost gold mines in Canada. With the two mines within the district, Island Gold and Magino employ over 900 team members who work in the underground and open pit operations and are located in northern Ontario, just east of the town of Dubreuilville, 83 kilometres northeast of Wawa. Through ongoing exploration success, Island Gold District’s Mineral Reserves and Resources have continued to grow in size and quality. Role Overview/Purpose The Environmental Coordinator develops and implement systems to monitor the environmental aspects of the site activities. They work in a pro-active manner to eliminate or reduce any environmental risks and liabilities and drive continual improvement with respect to environmental performance. It is a multidisciplinary position that is fast paced and requires skills in critical thinking, problem solving as well as strong ethics and good judgement.
Primary Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with all environmental permits (ECAs, PTTWs, Closure Plan and applicable legislation);
- Ensure processes are in place to achieve environmental compliance requirements and goals;
- Able to interpret and resolve environmental technical issues;
- Establish processes and oversee the conduct of environmental monitoring data collection and data management;
- Compile environmental reports (regulatory and internal);
- Coordinate with relevant stakeholders in order to achieve overall environmental compliance
- Problem-solving & trouble-shooting related to the management of environmental technical issues;
- Assist with environmental monitoring on an as-needed basis (surface water, groundwater, inspections and others as assigned);
- Implementing processes, including internal audits, to ensure technicians, site personnel, contractors and suppliers are complying with environmental regulatory and internal requirements.
Skills, Knowledge, Qualifications And Experience
- Technical diploma or bachelor’s degree in an Environmental field (Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Environmental Science or Engineering);
- 5-7 years of industrial experience from a mining operation, pulp & paper mill, consulting, or regulatory industry;
- Minimum 3-5 years experience as an Environmental Coordinator or similar role;
- Strong knowledge of applicable Environmental Provincial & Federal legislation & guidelines;
- Strong risk management/environmental management system knowledge;
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and other database management software;
- Self-starter who can anticipate needs and work independently;
- Highly organized with exceptional attention to detail and critical thinking;
- Able to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, growing work environment;
- The incumbent will demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, oral/written communication and presentation;
- French will be considered an asset;
- A strong commitment to working in a safe, socially responsible manner.
Working Conditions
- 7x7 rotational work
- The working hours follow a Fly-in-Fly-Out (FIFO) schedule. Flights are available from Sudbury, Rouyn-Noranda, or Toronto.
- Willingness and ability to work extra hours and on call when required.
- The successful candidate occasionally works outdoors in varying weather conditions.
