About the role
The Environmental Services Department supports all areas of St. Michael’s Hospital (SMH) and several off-site locations, ensuring the timely and detailed provision of housekeeping services, overseeing waste management, linen services (at the St. Michael’s and Providence sites (PHC), Patient Clinical Equipment services and other ad hoc project activities.
The Manager, Environmental Services, reports to the Senior Director of Support Services with the responsibility for working with programs, departments, services, clinical teams and staff within St. Michael's Hospital to maintain hospital cleanliness, provide linen services, manage waste, facilitate effective patient flow, and oversee patient clinical equipment services.
The Manager’s key responsibilities include:
- Recruiting, training, and developing team members.
- Performance management
- Developing and maintaining effective working relationships with the clinical units, human resources, corporate health and safety, Infection Control and other support services departments
- Participate in procurement related activities for the areas of responsibility and ensure compliance to contracts.
- Continually striving for improved patient/staff satisfaction and quality scores through the development and implementation of staff training and education
- Forwarding the Hospital’s Corporate Greening Strategy through the implementation of waste reduction and recycling programs
- Responsible for general waste and biohazardous waste collection, disposal and compliance to regulations and legislation.
- Implementing quality improvement initiatives in conjunction with clinical partners and infection control to ensure standards of cleanliness are exceeded.
- Objectively collect, collate and assess operational data to set and monitor quality improvement against standards.
- Fostering teamwork within the department: Encouraging, recognizing and rewarding performance to foster a strong sense of pride in the work of the department
- Supporting corporate projects and initiatives through the provision of environmental services input, expertise and leadership
- Ensuring the day-to-day practices and operations meet the terms of our Collective Agreement
- Preparing work schedules that meet user needs while operating within budget.
- Ensuring that safe working conditions are provided for all staff members.
- Oversight and coordination of Linen Services at the SMH, PHC sites and off-site locations, ensuring appropriate supply, distribution, and inventory management across units.
- Supervise and coordinate patient Clinical Equipment services at the SMH site, including monitoring availability, supporting distribution, and ensuring equipment is accessible to clinical teams as required.
QUALIFICATIONS:

Minimum of seven years recent management experience with at least four years in a supervisory/management role in a unionized environment

Post-secondary education from a recognized institute

Completion of OHA certificate in Environmental Supervision Level 1 and 2 preferred

Previous experience working in a hospital or healthcare setting.

Knowledge of waste management requirements and regulations, environmental sanitation, and infection control practices

Strong digital/computer skills.

Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
-
Good knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

Excellent interpersonal, communication, staff development and team building skills.

Demonstrated ability to coach staff and facilitate change.
-
Ability to work with a wide variety of stakeholders with a customer service focus.

Demonstrated organizational and time management skills, including prior experience in project management.

Training and/or experience using quality improvement methods and tools an asset.

Previous experience with using the Epic system.
