Purpose

The Steward reports to the Sous Chef.

The Steward plays a vital role in supporting the culinary team by maintaining

the cleanliness, sanitation, and organization of the kitchen environment. This position is primarily responsible for the efficient washing and sanitizing of dishes, cookware, and kitchen equipment to ensure food service operations run smoothly and without interruption. Stewards also maintain clean workstations, storage areas, floors, and waste disposal systems, while supporting composting and recycling initiatives.

As an essential member of the kitchen team, the Steward helps uphold food safety

and health standards through proper sanitation practices, safe handling procedures, and attention to cleanliness throughout the workspace. In addition to dishwashing and cleaning duties, Stewards assist with food preparation when needed and work collaboratively with team members across multiple railcars, contributing to a safe, organized, and efficient culinary operation.

This position is deemed Safety Sensitive. All onboard team members must adhere

to and comply with onboard safety standards. This also includes reporting any violations or hazards to onboard management and providing support in the event of an emergency. This position requires periodic access to an active railway area where impaired performance could result in a significant incident affecting the health and safety of team members, guests, team members, the public, property, or the environment.

This position is based out of Vancouver, Canada. 

 

Key Areas of Accountability

FOOD PREPARATION AND DAILY DUTIES

  •  Provide fast and efficient sanitation of all dishes and equipment to support daily services
  •  Keep workstation and storage areas clean and organized
  •  Clean kitchen floors, storage areas, and remove trash
  •  Assist with food preparation as required for service
  • Adheres to waste management and reduction initiatives, including composting and recycling programs

 

WORK COLLABORATIVELY IN A TEAM ENVIRONMENT

  • Flexibility to work in multiple railcars with varying teams   
  • Support your team members as required
  • Perform other duties as assigned by your leadership team.

MAINTAIN HEALTH AND SAFETY STANDARDS

  • Handle ingredients correctly and follow food safety regulations
  • Practice proper hand-washing technique and use gloves correctly when required to wear them
  • Maintain cleanliness and sanitization of all kitchen equipment and workstation areas

 

Qualifications

EDUCATION/CERTIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE

  • High School diploma or GED is an asset
  • Valid First Aid certification is an asset
  • BC Food Safe certification; required
  • Fluency in English language
  • Valid ID to satisfy domestic travel requirements (passport, driving license)

EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum 1 year restaurant dishwashing experience required

SKILLS

  •  Ability to prioritize and self-manage workload
  •  Time management and efficiency in executing tasks
  •  Effectively maintains organization in tight workspaces
  •  Physical endurance and emotional resiliency with the ability to adapt and work long days

 

Work Environment

  • Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 pounds 
  • Able to travel away from home base for up to 6 days at a time 
  • Must be legally authorized to work in Canada 
  • Outdoor work in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to work in a fast paced, small kitchen galley environment on a moving train

Hourly wage: $24.60/hour + gratuities
