Your Role

This is a full-time position based out of the Calgary Ronald McDonald House and may require travel to Ronald McDonald Houses and applicable events in Alberta. Some evening and weekend work will be required.

The Volunteer Supervisor plays a critical role in bringing Ronald McDonald House Alberta’s mission to life by ensuring volunteers feel welcomed, supported, and connected to the families they serve. By leading thoughtful recruitment, meaningful training, and intentional recognition, this role transforms volunteer interest into longterm commitment and exceptional guest experiences. Working closely with House leadership, People & Culture, and community partners, the Volunteer Supervisor helps create a culture of belonging and appreciation—where volunteers know their time matters, their contributions are valued, and their presence makes a real difference for families during some of their most challenging moments.

Your Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with leaders to assess volunteer needs and deliver fullcycle recruitment, selection, onboarding, and orientation for InHouse, Event, and group volunteers in alignment with provincial processes created by the People and Culture team

  • Act as the primary point of contact for all volunteers, responding promptly to applications, inquiries, issues, and concerns

  • Lead volunteers through onboarding, ensuring completion, tracking, and secure storage of all required documentation

  • Coordinate volunteer scheduling and shifts, including Helping Hands roles

  • Deliver volunteer orientation, tours ensuring consistent application of provincial volunteer processes

  • Arrange and communicate learning and development opportunities (e.g., food safety, Mandt, grief training) in partnership with P&C

  • Maintain accurate volunteer records, hours, and data in Volunteer Hub

  • Support volunteer communications to ensure awareness of organizational updates, activities, and events

  • Provide ongoing volunteer stewardship and support to ensure positive, meaningful volunteer experiences

  • Promote a culture of volunteer appreciation, coordinating recognition initiatives, gifts, awards, and celebrations

  • Collect volunteer feedback and manage exit processes, including distribution of exit interview surveys

  • Attend and support events as needed to ensure a positive volunteer experience

  • Represent the organization at community events, fairs, and outreach activities to promote volunteer opportunities

  • Build and maintain partnerships with businesses, schools, and community groups to expand and diversify the volunteer network

  • Support People & Culture with volunteer program planning, budgeting, position descriptions, and strategies aligned with organizational goals

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years’ experience in recruitment and/or volunteer planning

  • Post secondary education in Volunteer Management, Human Resources, Community Development or other relevant fields

  • Strong relationship building skills with both internal and external stakeholders

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

  • Highly organized, with previous experience in scheduling resources

  • Acts with integrity and professionalism in managing confidential information and respecting privacy

  • Must possess a high level of professionalism, tact and interpersonal skills to work with stakeholders at all levels

  • A self-starter with demonstrated experience utilizing volunteers to enhance programs and services within a non-profit organization

  • Experience in supporting and stewarding volunteers to support the operational need, while also providing an engaging experience for the volunteers

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and database software

  • Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed

  • Standard First Aid CPR-C and AED certification an asset

  • Must provide a clear Police Information Check

Nice to Haves

  • Previous experience working with families and children would be an asset

  • Food Safety Certificate an asset

Our warm, compassionate Houses provide a home-away-from-home for families who need to travel for medical reasons. When those families are experiencing one of life’s most difficult times, we offer them the gift of togetherness.

Since the first Houses were built in Alberta in 1985, we have supported tens of thousands of families. Every year, thousands will stay at one of Alberta’s Ronald McDonald Houses. These stays can last up to a few nights, or as long as several weeks or months at a time.

Each Ronald McDonald House has private family suites for families to rest. The Houses have open kitchens where families can sit down and share experiences over a homemade meal. The sense of community enables families to rely on each other and shore up strength.

Almost 70% of Canadian families live outside of a community with a children’s hospital, meaning they will need to travel to access medical care. Ronald McDonald Houses save families millions of dollars each year on accommodation, transportation, meals, laundry, parking, and more.
