Responsibilities

OVERALL PURPOSE:

The Systems Technologist ensures the security, accessibility and reliability of the Operational network, server and applications for BCRTC’s Train Operations Systems. Works with other technologists, technicians, systems specialists and engineers to ensure the network, systems and infrastructure successfully and efficiently support the train operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Develops in-depth knowledge of multiple Train Operations systems and supports network architecture, Server and Application design and implementation by:

Working closely with other technologists, technicians, systems specialists and engineers and obtaining a great understanding of different train operations systems, software and hardware;

Analyzing current and future states of the Operations network; designing and implementing a multi-layered Train Operations network architecture; developing roadmaps to address gaps;

Applying American Public Transportation Association (APTA), Center of Internet Security Standards (CIS) and other industry recognized standards;

Evaluating, recommending and integrating new systems technology into the Train Operations network;

Participating in defining specifications for the procurement of hardware and software for the Train Operations infrastructure.

Provides Systems Technologist expertise on projects related to Train Operations systems by:

Meeting with BCRTC’s business units, the Asset Integration Office, and other stake holders to determinenetwork and systems requirements;

Assisting with the integration of Capital projects and supporting the connection of new systems to the Train Operations network;

Working independently or under the direction of Systems Manager to prepare detailed cost estimates, material selection, manpower requirement and schedule for an assigned project;

Creating, testing and monitoring pilot projects and assessing results;

Maintaining an up to date awareness of network and systems technologies and making recommendations to the Manager regarding the application of these technologies.

Administers, maintains and improves the security and performance of BCRTC Train Operations network, servers and systems technologies by:

Developing and supporting the Train Operations network Security Zone, a critical security layer through which all Train Operations information/data securely passes through to external applications and Users

Designing, maintaining and administering systems access control, including Group Policy/Group Management (GPGM) and the centralized logging of access to files, folders and systems

Developing, implementing and maintaining the Train Operations network data back-up, restoration and Disaster Recovery;

Performing, and providing documentation for, security audits of the Operations network/system;

Creating and maintaining a comprehensive patch management program for proprietary vendor, and commercial off-the-shelf, Train Operations systems software and firmware;

Monitoring, analyzing and testing network performance, identifying and resolving issues, and performing Root Cause Analysis; producing Monthly Reports on the network performance;

Evaluating security tools and applications and making recommendations; implementing changes to improve system and operational efficiency;

Delivering technical support to system users to help resolve issues with Train Operations systems; liaisingwith vendor’s and support representatives when needed.

Resolving and troubleshooting advanced systems application related issues.

Maintains and updates hardware and software on BCRTC Train Operations network/system by:

Planning, configuring, implementing, testing and troubleshooting hardware and software changes and updates including those for servers, firewalls and core network switches;

Performing virtualization and hardening of computer systems;

Configuring and rolling out Workstations which reside on the Operations network

Documenting and proposing system changes to the Change Management Committee.

Creates and maintains the technical documentation of the Train Operations Network/system by:

Creating and updating network drawings and schematics;

Creating procedures for hardware and software installations and upgrades;

Maintaining records of network software and hardware and their configurations;

Maintaining records of systems software and their configurations;

Ensuring all changes meet the documentation standards of Change Management Board;

Documenting resolutions to network and systems problems;

Providing documented recommendations and solutions which mitigate potential future problems.

Responds to urgent calls outside business hours from Supervisor.

Performs related duties as assigned, such items being of a minor nature that do not affect the value of the job.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Diploma in Computer Science, or equivalent.

EXPERIENCE

4 years of Network, Server and Systems administration experience supporting transportation operations including SCADA, Platform Information Display systems, Tunnel Intrusion Detection systems, CCTV, OTN, FIBER, Telephony, Fire Life Safety systems, radio communications, Wayside Monitoring systems, Security Card Access systems, network/server/application design, implementation, troubleshooting and security. A further period of up to 1 year in the position is required to develop in-depth knowledge of BCRTC Train Operations Systems and subsystems.

Advanced verbal and written communication skills.

Other Information

Recruitment Process: An applicant will be required to demonstrate their suitability for this position by meeting the minimum level of qualifications and experience in order to be invited into the selection process. A standard interview format will be used including general, scenario and behavioural descriptive interview questions.

Work Schedule

40 hours per week.

This position works predominately on-site.

Rate of Pay

Wage: $60.43 per hour

Please note: All new employees will be subject to a 6-week trainee rate at 75% of the hourly rate with the remainder of the first year at 90% of the hourly rate.
