About the role

Radiation Therapist, Radiation Oncology

Location: Victoria, BC

Central Victoria Veterinary Hospital is welcoming a Radiation Therapist at our Emergency & Specialty Referral Centre.

This role works closely with our Radiation Oncology team to provide radiation services and patient care by established policies and standards of professional practice for radiation therapy. Responsibilities will include RT delivery and follow-up in addition to other duties. The Radiation Oncology service offers leading-edge care for patients in need of diagnosis and treatment related to various types of cancer. Our equipment includes a new Varian Halcyon, on-site CT and MRI. This team also works closely with our Medical Oncology and Surgical Oncology Services.

Successful candidates will ideally possess a degree in Radiation Therapy or a recognized certificate and be Canadian Association for Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) Certified. Previous experience working in veterinary medicine is an asset but not a requirement. A strong interest in learning about veterinary medicine and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment are essential.

Schedule: This position offers some flexibility for part-time to full-time hours. The department is currently open Monday through Thursday each week.

Additional qualifications and attributes you must embrace to be successful in this role:

  • Communicate and coordinate with our Radiation Oncologist, Hospitalist, Registered Veterinary Technician and Technician Assistant on patient plans, schedules, etc

  • Perform treatment planning procedures by:

  • Constructing immobilization and beam directional, and shaping devices.

  • Using simulation and related equipment for the generation and verification of treatment plans.

  • Positioning and marking the patient to ensure optimal dose distribution & reproducibility of the treatment plan.

  • CT set-up and acquisition

  • Review, interpret and implement radiation treatment prescriptions

  • Assist clients with the interpretation of the treatment plan and evaluate clients' understanding of treatment and side effects

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical records, client communications, diagnostic treatments, and financial records

  • Perform quality assurance checks of equipment in the assigned work area according to established procedures, maintain records of checks and take appropriate action on equipment malfunctions.

  • Maintain a safe environment for patients and staff by adhering to safety policies and standards and emergency procedures.

  • Update own clinical knowledge and skills in Radiation Therapy by methods such as reviewing professional literature, consulting with other professionals and participating in relevant education programs.

  • Ability to thrive in a steady and often fast-paced environment
