The Grounds Worker is responsible for the care and maintenance of campus grounds and landscape features to ensure a clean, safe, attractive, and environmentally responsible outdoor environment. This position supports the Grounds Department through regular and seasonal landscape tasks, snow removal, and other duties that reflect the university’s mission and values.
Key Areas of Accountability
Leadership and Team Management
- Work collaboratively with the Grounds team, including staff and student workers, to maintain campus landscapes and sports fields.
- Contribute to a positive team culture based on respect, cooperation, and shared responsibility.
- Assist in training new student workers in safe work practices, equipment operation, and grounds maintenance standards.
- Follow direction from supervisors while demonstrating reliability, initiative, and attention to detail.
- Support campus seasonal operations, including snow removal, leaf cleanup, planting, and irrigation maintenance.
- Communicate effectively with supervisors, team members, and other departments to ensure coordinated grounds services.
- Follow all workplace safety standards and actively contribute to a safe and accessible campus environment.
Grounds Maintenance Operations
Year-Round Responsibilities
- Performs routine grounds maintenance, including lawn mowing, edging, trimming, and weed control.
- Maintains garden beds through planting, mulching, pruning, deadheading, and seasonal clean-up.
- Assists with tree care (e.g., watering, pruning, monitoring health).
- Operates and maintains a variety of hand tools and powered equipment (mowers, blowers, trimmers, etc.).
- Ensures cleanliness of outdoor spaces by removing litter and debris.
- Assists in hardscape maintenance, such as sweeping walkways, and inspecting outdoor furniture and structures.
- Report’s maintenance issues or hazards to the Grounds Manager.
Seasonal Responsibilities
- Participates in winter operations including snow removal and de-icing on sidewalks, pathways, and entryways.
- Assists with seasonal tasks such as leaf cleanup, winterizing irrigation, spring planting, and bed preparation.
- Supports event setup/takedown for campus functions and outdoor gatherings.
Equipment Asset Management
- Uses landscaping equipment and machinery responsibly to extend service life and reduce downtime.
- Performs pre-operation checks and routine maintenance (e.g., oil levels, filter cleaning, blade sharpening).
- Maintains accurate usage logs and reports any malfunctions or damage immediately.
- Ensures all tools and resources are returned, cleaned, and stored properly after use.
- Adheres to safe handling practices and PPE requirements when using chemicals or machinery.
- Assists in inventory tracking and tool audits to ensure departmental readiness.

- Ability to operate a variety of grounds maintenance equipment (e.g., mowers, trimmers, blowers, tractors, utility vehicles).
- Ability to perform physical labour outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Good communication and teamwork skills; able to take direction and work independently when required.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to prioritize tasks and complete work efficiently.
- Basic computer skills for record-keeping and reporting (e.g., Microsoft Office or work order systems).
- Demonstrated commitment to safe work practices and adherence to TWU policies and regulations.

Education

High school diploma or equivalent required.

Additional training or coursework in landscaping, horticulture, turf management, or a related field is an asset.

Valid BC Driver’s License required.

Relevant certifications (e.g., Pesticide Applicator’s License, First Aid, WHMIS, or equipment operation certificates) considered an asset.
Experience
- Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in groundskeeping, landscaping, or related outdoor maintenance work.
- Experience in sports field maintenance, turf care, and irrigation systems is preferred.
- Experience working in an institutional or campus environment is considered an asset.
