Position Overview:

Resumes are being accepted for the temporary position of Corridor Technician within the Engineering and Transportation Services Department. Reporting to the Supervisor, Traffic Engineering, the Corridor Technician will work with Utility Coordinator in receiving, reviewing and overseeing Municipal Consent Agreements and Street Occupancy permits for Utilities and 3rd party applications in the City of Guelph. With a focus on detailed record keeping and compliance with municipal standards the successful applicant will review and monitor utility construction activities within the City of Guelph. Guided by the goals and objectives of the City of Guelph Corporate Strategic Plan and committed to the Corporate Values of integrity, service, inclusion, wellness and learning, the candidate will aid in the achievement of the Community Vision for an inclusive, connected, prosperous city.

Key duties and responsibilities

  • Receives and files applications from utilities under the Municipal Consent Agreement.
  • Receives and files Street Occupancy Permit Applications
  • Complete technical review, and approval of plant installation by all utilities (with support from Civil Permit Coordinator), ensuring that City policies, restrictions and other relevant regulations are adhered to. Develop and maintain records of all utility works.
  • Responds to general and specific inquiries regarding ongoing applications or projects.
  • Provide inspection duties for ongoing utility projects including documentation and measurements of disturbed areas for restoration.
  • Represent the City as a liaison with the utility companies.
  • Liaise with internal staff both within Engineering, with other City departments, external agencies and consultants during the design and construction of projects.
  • Assist with preparation of contracts for Utility Restoration Contracts.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Experience related to the duties listed above, normally acquired through the completion of post-secondary education in Civil Engineering Technology or a closely related discipline and 3-6 months in civil underground works and/or working with utility permitting. Candidates with an equivalent education and experience may be considered.
  • Must be certified or eligible for certification as an Engineering Technologist by O.A.C.E.T.T.
  • Must possess a valid G driver’s licence and have a good driving record. Successful candidates will be required to provide a current driver’s abstract prior to their start date to confirm their licence is held in good standing and that it has not been suspended or revoked under the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) or Criminal Code of Canada in the last 5 years. The City of Guelph will take into consideration the number of demerit points and/or nature of the infractions to determine if it meets our requirements.
  • Intermediate skills with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word and Outlook)
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple assignments to meet deadlines.
  • Must be able to work effectively in a team environment
  • Knowledge of the Occupational Health & Safety Act
  • Knowledge of MTO Book 7 considered an asset.

Hours of work 35 hours per week, 7 hours per day, Monday to Friday between the hours of 8:00 am and 4:30 pm.
