Intern, Business Analyst (Intermodal Operations)

This is a full-time summer internship lasting from May 11, 2026, until August 28, 2026.

Job Summary

The Business Analyst Intern will support CN’s Network Operations & Planning team by analyzing operational data, developing reporting tools, and contributing to strategic initiatives that optimize intermodal asset utilization. This internship offers exposure to Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), API integrations, and business intelligence platforms such as Tableau and Power BI. The intern will collaborate with cross-functional teams and gain hands-on experience in data-driven decision-making.

Main Responsibilities

  • Assist in managing and analyzing large datasets using Excel and visualization tools.
  • Support data sourcing and evaluation from Intermodal and Transportation systems.
  • Help refine and format data for reporting and stakeholder review.
  • Contribute to executive summaries and dashboards with guidance from senior analysts.
  • Consolidate cross-functional data to support capacity and demand insights.
  • Participate in developing tools and processes for network optimization.
  • Conduct basic analysis to support train design and operational planning.
  • Assist in creating reporting solutions using Excel, Tableau, or Power BI.
  • Collaborate with end users to support self-serve analytical tools.
  • Document business processes and identify areas for automation.
  • Learn and apply modern tools (Tableau, Power BI) in a team setting.
  • Help define and track performance metrics (KPIs).
  • Identify and flag data inconsistencies for resolution.
  • Support the creation of presentations and summary reports for senior stakeholders.
  • Attend meetings and sessions to understand stakeholder metrics and priorities.
  • Support efforts to bridge gaps between Transportation and Intermodal teams.
  • Help maintain communication and collaboration with internal customers and departments.
  • Participate in communication across Intermodal and Transportation teams.
  • Use data to propose ideas for resolving short- and long-term planning challenges.

Requirements

  • Academic or internship experience in data analysis or business analytics.
  • Experience working with large volumes of data and reporting tools.
  • Familiarity with SAP, SRS, Tableau, Power BI or similar systems is an asset.
  • Follows safety procedures, information security instructions and Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) principles to lead by example
  • Develops solutions that align with customers’ expectations to increase satisfaction
  • Shares timely information within and across functions to get things done effectively
  • Inspires others with impactful communications and adapts to the audience
  • Initiates and drives organizational changes to enable business transformation
  • Knows the business and stays current with industry trends to elevate expertise and work
  • Applies analytical thinking to make recommendations that pursue sustainable performance
  • Is agile in responding to the rapid evolution of the industry and of technology
  • Continuously innovates to create value, without compromising on safety and quality
  • Deals with pressure and change by staying calm to quickly adapt to changes
  • Proficient in Excel (pivot tables, formulas, macros), Tableau, Power BI, or similar tools. Familiarity with SQL or database concepts is an asset.
  • Understanding of EDI and API data flows.
  • Basic financial literacy (ROI, breakeven analysis)
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.

Education

  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in computer science, Engineering, Business, or Commerce.
