The Role
- To assess, diagnose and treat a designated caseload independently within Acute SLT services, potential for cross site cover as required.
- To work within uni-professional and multi-professional teams to ensure coordinated effective care and communication for patients and carers
- To develop the clinical and organisational skills required for this developing specialist post
- To collect and provide research and audit data, and comment on proposed service/ policy developments as appropriate

Key Responsibilities Patient Care Direct clinical
- Accountable for all aspects of own practice, providing direct and indirect patient care within scope.
- Assesses capacity, gains valid consent, and works within relevant legal frameworks for patients lacking capacity.
- Assesses and analyses clinical information to provide diagnoses across specialist clinical areas.
- Provides specialist advice to support multidisciplinary clinical decision-making.
- Independently plans, delivers, evaluates care programmes, including discharge decisions.
- Liaises with senior SLTs in managing a specialist caseload.
- Works collaboratively with SLT and wider team members on projects and therapy packages.
Indirect clinical
- Delegates routine clinical tasks to appropriate support staff.
- Applies principles of Clinical Governance and contributes to audit and service improvement.
- Uses specialist knowledge to inform local practice and service or policy developments.
- Shares information appropriately with professionals, adhering to data protection requirements.
- Contributes to effective multidisciplinary and single-discipline team working and care planning.
Educational
- Supports SLT student clinical placements under senior supervision.
- Delivers occasional in-service training to support professional development.
- Explains the role of SLTs to students, visitors, and volunteers as required.
- Participates in performance review and professional development, applying new skills to practice.
SYSTEMS AND EQUIPMENT
- Develops knowledge of low- and high-tech communication aids and supports patients and carers in their use.
- Selects and uses appropriate SLT resources effectively.
- Develops working knowledge of IT systems, specialist software, and AAC technology.
- Collects activity data accurately in line with procedures.
- Maintains accurate, up-to-date patient records and mandatory statistics in line with professional and regulatory standards.
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
- Holds Speech & language therapy degree or equivalent leading to statutory Health Professions Council registration
- Requires to undertake CPD to validate Health Professions Council annual re-registration in order to practise in the NHS
- CPD portfolio contains evidence of relevant training to develop skills and knowledge, and keep up to date with new techniques to promote and maintain good practice through reading, attendance at courses, meetings and special interest groups
- has dysphagia training and experience relevant to the post
- has knowledge of assessment and therapeutic tools relevant to patient group
- is aware of and complies with national policies and procedures
- is aware of the principles of audit
- awareness of the roles of other professional relevant to the patient group
- demonstrates evidence of annual programme of mandatory training e.g. CPR, Moving and Handling, Fire Safety Training
- develops coping skills and strategies.
