Halifax Regional Municipality is inviting applications for One (1) Permanent Full-time positions of Electronic Technician in the Transit Fleet division of Halifax Transit.

Under the direction of the Fleet Supervisor, Transit Fleet, the Electronics Technician will be accountable for repair, installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of Halifax Transit’s electronic systems.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots and repairs onboard technologies including fare boxes; mobile data terminals; computer-aided dispatch, vehicle detection devices, fixed-point and mobile transmitting, receiving and radio communications systems; audio-video equipment (CCTV); automatic passenger counters; and destination signs following manufacturers’ specifications. Performs both corrective and preventive maintenance.
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots and repairs cabling, brackets, and mountings for onboard technologies.
- Installs, tests, troubleshoots and repairs field technologies including electronic ferry terminal turnstiles; electronic message boards; electronic kiosks; smartcard loading machines; plus associated cabling, brackets and mountings for field technologies.
- Performs shop and field tests using diagnostic tools such as service monitors, spectrum analyzers, frequency counters, digital voltmeters, oscilloscopes, audiometers, ammeters, and microwave test equipment. Tests for power output, audio quality, frequency sensitivity, and frequency selectivity.
- Calibrates and repairs test and diagnostic equipment.
- Troubleshoots and determines appropriate actions for repair of printed circuit boards to component level; sends to manufacturer for warranty repair or repairs in Halifax Transit facilities.
- Designs and fabricates templates, patterns, and communications mounts of materials that include metal, wood, and plastic.
- Oversees and inspects the work of contractors.
- Compiles and maintains computerized and paper records related to work completed and inventory of parts, supplies and materials used. Enters and retrieves data from District computer programs.
- Compiles and organizes updated manufacturers’ specifications to keep service manuals current and reports specification changes and parts substitutions to the Procurement department.
- Responds to computerized, telephone and in-person requests for communication equipment.
- Performs preventative maintenance inspections and performs tests to ensure optimal performance; maintains calibration and repair records.
- Maintains and writes work procedures for tasks performed; generates failure analysis and problem reports to management.
- Provides field support for mobile fleet and technology installations at other Metro Transit sites.
- Maintains safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures, rules and regulations.
- Works with management on maintenance schedules and projections.
- Contributes to team effort by accomplishing related results as needed.
- May perform other related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS: Education and Experience:
- Electronics engineering technician or technologist diploma from technology institute or community college accredited by the CCTT.
- Three (3) years’ experience in troubleshooting, testing, repair and replacement and installation of mechanical, electrical, and electronic assemblies and systems.
- Capable of troubleshooting down to component level to determine cause and remedy of any malfunction.
- Solid computer, typing skills, and able to use Microsoft Windows, Internet Explorer, Microsoft Office and Microsoft Excel.
- Possess a valid driver’s license, with a good driving record. (A current abstract is required before appointment).
Technical / Job Specific Knowledge and Abilities:
- Experience using electronic test equipment, hand and power tools.
- Be able to read technical drawings, datasheets, schematics and written work instructions.
- Methods, materials, tools and equipment used in installation, preventative maintenance and primary repair of communication systems and equipment.
- Must have own hand tools.
- Must be able to climb and work at heights and in cramped spaces.
- Safety awareness and responsible work attitude.
- An analytical approach to problem solving.
- A highly motivated self-starter able to work with minimal supervision.
- Good eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity.

SALARY:$40.24/hour for red seal - $36.13/hour for apprentice according to the Collective Agreement between the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 508 and Halifax Regional Municipality.
