The Sports Field Technician plays a key hands-on role in maintaining Trinity Western University’s athletic fields and supporting general groundskeeping duties across the Langley campus. This position focuses on providing high-quality, safe, and visually appealing sports fields that align with the operational goals of the Athletics Department while contributing to the overall care of campus grounds.

Key Areas of Accountability

Leadership and Team Management

  • Provides leadership to seasonal or student staff during field projects, setup operations, or maintenance tasks.
  • Supports the Grounds Manager by communicating team progress, challenges, and daily task updates.
  • Promotes a positive and respectful work culture, modeling professionalism and Christian service values.
  • Coaches and mentors less experienced staff and foster a team-based approach to operations.
  • Encourages accountability, safety, and excellence in field care standards among crew members

Sports Field Operations

March to November (Athletic Season Focus)

  • Execute daily turf and field maintenance in coordination with Athletics Department objectives.
  • Prepare, repair, and restore playing surfaces before and after each event or practice.
  • Support soccer operations by assisting with event setup and takedown as required.
  • Calibrate and apply fertilizers, fungicides, herbicides, and pesticides in accordance with a progressive agronomic turf management program.
  • Monitor and assist in maintaining the field irrigation systems.
  • Operate a variety of turf and grounds equipment, including mowers, tractors, utility vehicles, trimmers, etc.
  • Perform seasonal turf health practices including overseeding, aeration, top dressing, verti-cutting, and irrigation repair.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of the sports field facility and surrounding areas.
  • Trim and prune grass, shrubs, and trees around field boundaries to ensure safety and aesthetics.
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Grounds Manager.

December to February (Grounds Support Focus)

  • Assist Grounds Crew in general landscaping duties such as bed maintenance, tree and shrub pruning, and promoting healthy plant growth.
  • Participate in snow and ice removal operations for sidewalks and parking lots to ensure campus safety during winter weather.
  • Support preventive maintenance and minor repairs on Ground’s equipment and tools.
  • Collaborate with interdepartmental teams, providing assistance to Maintenance staff when required.
  • Demonstrate adaptability and flexibility in shifting priorities and seasonal duties.

The Person

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong knowledge of natural grass sports field care, including aeration, mowing, irrigation, fertilization, pest/disease management, and field markings.
  • Familiarity with Canadian Landscape Standards and BC Landscape & Nursery Association (BCLNA) practices.
  • Understanding of soil science, drainage systems, and turfgrass growth cycles.
  • Ability to safely operate and maintain specialized turf equipment and power tools.
  • Skilled in operating and maintaining mowers, aerators, top dressers, tractors, irrigation systems, and related turf equipment.
  • Strong attention to detail to ensure fields meet the highest standards of playability and safety.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong time management and problem-solving skills.
  • Good communication skills for coordination with athletics staff, coaches, and university departments.
  • Physically able to perform outdoor work in all weather conditions.
  • Basic computer skills for record-keeping, scheduling, and reporting.

Standards & Requirements

Education:

  • High school diploma required, post-secondary diploma or coursework in turf management, horticulture, or a related field preferred.
  • Certifications in turfgrass management, irrigation systems, pesticide application, or sports field maintenance are considered an asset.
  • Valid BC Driver’s License required.

Experience:

  • 4-5 years of practical experience in natural grass sports field maintenance, landscaping, or groundskeeping.
  • Experience with high-performance natural grass soccer or athletic fields preferred.
  • Previous work in an institutional, municipal, or university setting is an asset.
