Cameco is one of the largest global providers of the uranium fuel needed to power a secure energy future. The Blind River refinery is part of Cameco’s Fuel Services Division. Blind River is situated on the North Channel of Lake Huron on the Trans Canada Highway, midway between Sudbury and Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.
Position And Responsibilities
As a member of the protective services department, the health safety specialist is responsible for fostering a positive safety culture; ensuring the site is in compliance with occupational health and safety regulatory requirements; recommending accepted industry or best practices for health safety; and assisting with the implementation, maintenance and training of corporate and site safety programs and procedures.
You will support the company’s policies, procedures, goals, and objectives to promote a safe culture and productive workplace, which includes a comprehensive hazard identification program and processes.
The health safety specialist is responsible for overseeing the industrial hygiene program including baseline hazard assessments, developing sampling plans, equipment purchases, and analysis of sampling data. This role also is responsible for overseeing health safety equipment inspections and purchase; participating in the site, divisional and corporate health safety committees; completing accident investigation; completing internal procedural compliance assessments; updating site safety risk lists and hazard prevention program documents; and overseeing ergonomic assessments. Other duties may be assigned based on knowledge, experience and skills.
Education And Qualifications
A degree or diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, or a related discipline Canadian Registered Safety Professional or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) would be strongly preferred A minimum of five to seven years of relevant work experience, preferably with demonstrated experience in areas such as industrial hygiene, ergonomics, accident investigation, chemical use and storage Thorough understanding of occupational health and safety legislation (preferably federal) and the ability to advise on corrective actions and facilitate change Strong leadership skills, excellent communication, organization, and critical thinking skills Ability to work collaboratively and proactively in a team environment Applicants will be considered for a level within the job progression which is appropriate to their qualifications.
