About the role

Reporting to the Lead, Sustaining Projects, the Senior Engineer will be responsible for managing and overseeing of all aspects of planning and execution of the sustaining projects portfolio for assigned asset(s), ensuring project designs adheres to codes and regulations and project costs and schedules stay within established benchmarks. When required, it is expected that the Senior Engineer will support other assets/projects to ensure entire portfolio of projects is executed in budget year.

This role will interact with internal and external parties at all levels, and is expected to consistently apply exceptional interpersonal, communication and teamwork skills. Having a customer service approach and setting priorities and allocating necessary resources on a day-to-day and long-term basis are essential functions to satisfying the primary requirements of this position.

Travel to field locations will be required.

Responsibility Area #1 – Portfolio Management (Asset Level)

  • Ensure the portfolio for assigned asset(s) is delivered within the approved business case commitments (HSE, cost, schedule, functionality, through-put, and reliability).
  • Successfully deliver multiyear sustaining projects plans and manage the process to assess and execute projects for assigned asset(s).
  • Closely track and provide monthly reporting on progress, scope, and budget for portfolio of projects for asset(s) using project management best practice, processes, tools and techniques.
  • Advise on matters involving anticipated cost overruns and recommendations regarding major changes to planned projects.

Responsibility Area #2 – Program Management

  • Ensure the scope, specifications, designs, construction, testing and commissioning of all projects in portfolio for assigned asset(s) meet the requirements of the licenses, permits, approved project documents and the KPIs related to the projects technical and functional aspects.
  • Ensure that all sustaining projects are developed in accordance with ATCO EnPower’s Sustaining Project Lifecycle Process.
  • Ensure that all appropriate departments and required stakeholder partners are involved in projects in a timely manner to create stakeholder buy-in and acceptance of deliverables.
  • Coordinate and manage a multifunctional project team to achieve the technical and functional KPIs.
  • Develop project plans to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, specifications, health, safety, and operating practices and mitigate risks.
  • Ensure the design base documents result in the delivery of projects which accurately reflect the end user requirements consistent with the business case and comply with all required licenses and permits.
  • Ensure a Project Execution Plan (PEP) is created, ensuring that all engineering, procurement, and construction activities required to achieve commercial operation and/or business objective are completed on time and within the approved project budget.
  • Manage the work of consultants, contractors and other vendors to ensure work is according to specification, timeline and budget.
  • Ensure the commissioning and testing of the facility is achieved to verify the systems operate to the intent of the agreements, contracts, and design documents.
  • Ensure close-out activities are completed for all contracts including the successful resolution of any claims.
  • Review and approve both customer and internal initiated changes including the application of a proactive and robust change management program.

Responsibility Area #3 – Leadership Responsibilities

  • Drive excellence across Sustaining Projects team performance including the development of continuous improvement initiatives and processes.
  • Provide leadership, coaching, and mentorship to junior and intermediate engineers within the team, as well as larger engineering group.
  • Coordinate with manager and senior team members to ensure portfolio is optimally resourced to plan and execute annual business plan.
  • Build relations with internal customers/stakeholders and represent the Sustaining Projects team in internal and external forums.

Responsibility Area #4 – Health & Safety and Environment & Regulatory

  • Achieve H&S and E&R compliance outcomes that meet the requirements of legislation, licenses, permits, ATCO’s policies and practices and the Sustaining Projects’ Portfolio goals related to H&S and E&R.
  • Work with the H&S and E&R departments and committees to ensure that ATCO standards and OH&S requirements are followed in project planning and execution.
  • Participation in the annual Corporate Emergency Response Planning Exercise.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • 10+ years' experience in the energy industry
  • P.Eng designation through APEGA is required
  • PMP designation would be considered an asset
  • Commitment to maintaining integrity, safety, and a caring approach in all project activities.
  • Proven ability in leadership, strategic thinking, change management, process, and implementation strategies to optimize both quality and cost-effectiveness of services to achieve performance objectives.
  • Motivated, innovative, and capable of handling several assignments while managing a diverse range of stakeholders/contractors.
  • Demonstrated resourcefulness and the ability to work as an effective team member.
  • Excellent negotiation and problem-solving skills to successfully guide the work of others including consultants, contractors, and other vendors.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to present critical information to field operations and company management in a simple and concise manner.
  • An ability to collaborate effectively across a cross-functional team while supporting conflicting priorities and deadlines, while remaining agile and steadfast.
  • Believes that an ideal work environment is collaborative and encourages everyone to be curious and bring their best ideas forward.
  • Constantly improving technical skills and knowledge through attendance of training courses, industry meetings, and workshops.
  • Demonstrated proficiency utilizing MS Office software applications, including MS Project and Power Point.
  • Class 5 Vehicle License.
