Division: Global News Ottawa – The West Block
Work Status: Full-Time
Location: Ottawa, ON (On-site)
About the role:
Global Ottawa and The West Block are seeking a full-time ENG Digital Technician to join Canada’s #1 Parliamentary Bureau.
Reporting to the Bureau Manager, you’ll be part of a high-performing newsroom at the heart of national political coverage.
This role supports Global’s flagship newscast, Global National, and the country’s leading political affairs program, The West Block with Mercedes Stephenson.
As a member of the Global Ottawa team, you’ll play a critical role in capturing, producing, and delivering high-quality digital and broadcast content across multiple platforms, including GlobalNews.ca.
This is a fast-paced, collaborative environment where your technical expertise directly contributes to journalism that informs Canadians nationwide.
This position requires flexibility, with shifts that may include early mornings, days, evenings, and weekends as operational needs require.
This is a Group 4 position under the current collective agreement.
You will contribute by:
The following is a paraphrase of the primary functions and does not outline all of the duties and responsibilities for this position:
- Editing national network packages for Global National News, as well as full show segments for market leading political affairs show “The West Block” and Globalnews.ca
- Editing videos and stories using non-linear software both in the newsroom and in the field.
- Ingesting video to network servers for use across all Global stations.
- Working with reporters, digital journalists, producers, and other editorial team members to create best-in-class story executions.
- Editing daily news items and longer form investigative pieces as needed.
- Being a strong advocate and mentor for digital content and audience-first workflow.
- Archiving bureau video
- Safely operating and maintaining a company vehicle.
- Assisting with graphics and technical producing when needed.
- Representing Global Television in a professional and courteous manner.
- Studio camera work for reporter "on-cameras" as needed
- Performing other duties as required.
Skills and experience you will bring:
- Post-secondary education in a broadcast-related field.
- Experience working in a newsroom environment with ENG cameras, non-linear editing, field lighting, and editing full packages.
- Experience covering federal politics is a strong asset.
- Proven ability to edit with speed and accuracy on various editing systems; familiarity with Edius, Grass Valley, Open Media, and Final Cut Pro considered an asset.
- Ability to troubleshoot camera and live equipment in the field.
- Experience in updating online and broadcast content with a content management system.
- Strong editorial and storytelling skills.
- Use sound editorial judgment and journalist ethics in the handling of sensitive material.
- Strong media management and archiving skills.
- Able to act independently with minimum supervision as well as collaborate effectively in a team environment.
- Decisive under pressure and able to prioritize and meet multiple daily deadlines.
- Willing and able to adapt to rapidly changing technology and workflows.
- Positive, can-do attitude.
- A valid G driver’s license with a clear driving record.
