The Role

We are seeking an experienced Controller to join our team, providing financial oversight and strategic guidance to our Finance and Accounting operations. You will be responsible for all aspects of accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, compliance, and internal controls—ensuring the ongoing integrity of financial data while supporting the company’s growth objectives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership oversight to accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, and Owner Operator settlements.
  • Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting in compliance with regulatory and internal standards.
  • Oversee annual budget preparation, forecasting and monitor financial performance against targets.
  • Develop, implement, and review policies and procedures to safeguard assets and support financial compliance.
  • Lead internal and external audits, support tax filings and related compliance.
  • Monitor cash flow, liquidity, and working capital; support treasury functions.
  • Lead the accounting staff, providing mentorship and fostering professional development.
  • Prepare financial analysis, KPIs, and business recommendations for the senior leadership team.
  • Drive process improvements and lead the team in adoption of technology and system solutions.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation (or equivalent) required, with 5+ years progressive experience in accounting/finance within a complex organization (transportation industry an asset).
  • Minimum 3 years of supervisory experience within a finance environment.
  • Strong knowledge of financial reporting standards and applicable regulations.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel; solid skills with other Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience with Dynamics (Great Plains) or similar ERP systems is an asset.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving, and organizational skills.
  • Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership abilities.
  • High attention to detail, integrity, and professional judgment.

Founded in 1987 as a one-man operation, Steve's Livestock Transport has since grown to become North America's largest commercial livestock transportation company. Over the last 25 years, we have expanded to include a dry freight division. We have three locations to serve our customers, in Blumenort and Brandon, Manitoba and Acme, Alberta.

We have a fleet of 130 power units, transporting more than 2,500 cattle and 150,000 pigs per week within Canada and the United States. All 3 of our locations have commercial washing and repair facilities for trucks and trailers. In addition to servicing our own units, these facilities provide custom washing and repairs for other large equipment and fleets as well.
