Through the Health Care Provider Contract, Calian employs health care professionals across Canada who are integral to supporting the health and wellbeing of our military members.

Position Overview

Medical device reprocessing (MDR) technicians are responsible for all steps of the reprocessing of reusable medical devices as well as the testing and maintenance of reprocessing equipment. Principles of aseptic technique shall be used and infection control practices in accordance with Canadian Forces Health Services policies and programs shall be followed. MDR technicians perform their work in accordance with CSA Canadian medical device reprocessing standards (CSA Z314-18), the Royal Canadian Dental Corps Infection Prevention Program and 1 Dental Unit Quality and Patient Safety standard operating procedures

Responsibilities

  • Be familiar with all aspects of reprocessing including but not limited to: receiving,, disassembling, cleaning, inspection and functionality testing, packaging, labeling, monitoring, sterilizing, and storing of reusable medical/dental devices, equipment and supplies used in the dental clinic in accordance with CSA Canadian medical device reprocessing standards (CSA Z314-18), the Royal Canadian Dental Corps Infection Prevention Program, 1 Dental Unit Quality and Patient Safety standard operating procedures and relevant manufacturer’s instructions;
  • Perform biological/chemical indicator and other quality assurance testing, accurately document and promptly respond to unfavorable results by reporting problems to a designated supervisor, initiate recall and troubleshooting;
  • Release sterilized loads based on quality assurance testing results and process parameters;
  • Achieve accurate traceability of sterilized device packages by using available tracking and labelling systems;
  • Operate and maintain a variety of equipment used to reprocess reusable medical/dental devices, performing required daily, weekly and monthly user maintenance procedures;
  • Assemble and provide reusable medical device cassettes as required for a variety of dental procedures;
  • Inventory, monitor, order and restock consumable supplier in MDR area;
  • Clean and disinfect the MDR area in accordance with CSA Canadian medical device reprocessing standards (CSA Z314-18) and Canadian Forces Health Services policies and programs;
  • Manage laundry from MDR in accordance with CSA standards (CSA Z314-18) and Canadian Forces Health Services policies and program and local standard of operating procedures;
  • Follow principles of aseptic technique and infection control practices in accordance with Canadian Forces Health Services policies and programs;
  • Follow established safety protocols including falls prevention, sharps and general safety;
  • Document and report on activities within the MDR area;
  • Provide clinical leadership, guidance, and applicable training to co-workers pertaining to MDR activities; and
  • Other associated tasks relevant to this occupational group.

Qualifications

Medical device reprocessing technicians must, as a minimum:

  • have successfully completed a formal MDR training program from an accredited college or institution;
  • be eligible to write the Canadian Standards Association Certified Medical Reprocessing Technician Personnel exam, and;
  • be certified, as required, by the province in which the technician is employed.

The MDR technician must, as a minimum, have 1 year of full-time equivalent experience in a medical device reprocessing working environment.
